Max obliged. “I know. That’s what I said. I could see if we’d been here for two years or less. But we put in our time.”
“Exactly. Hey, I’ll be right back. I need to take a leak.”
Jessie nodded, then sipped his liquor.
Max returned a short time later. “This is our last drink.” He filled their glasses half full.
Jessie took the bait. Max said he received a text from Genn telling him Jessie reached out to his contact, confirming we were dead.
“Jessie, we should drink every shift. Takes the edge off, you know.”
He smirked. “I agree.”
They each turned up their glasses, swallowing the whiskey.
“Let’s get back to work,” Max stated.
“I know you motherfuckers aren’t drinking on the job.” They turned to the deep voice coming from the doorway.
“Divy, what the fuck? You scared the shit out of me,” Max huffed.
He walked toward them. “Put your guns away.”
They did as they were told.
Divy palmed the counter, scowling at Jessie.
“There’s nothing I hate more than a rat.”
His navy-blue suit jacket fell open, revealing his Glock.
“No, one likes a rat, Divy,” Jessie chuckled, glancing between them.
Divy stood to his full height. His six-five frame towering over Jessie. “Let’s take a ride.”
He stood. Jessie may have not been a tall guy, but he was stocky and could take almost any guy down.
If you’ve watched any mafia movie, you knew those four words Divy said meant you weren’t coming back.
Jessie’s hand ran over his gray suit. “Where are we going?” He swallowed hard.
“To see the boss,” Divy replied.
“You played it pretty cool, there, Jessie.” I pointed at the screen.
“I bet you were shocked to see I was still alive.” Dark, hysterical laughter released from my throat.
“Thank God for Genn. He landed the plane that was falling out of the sky, headed for the ocean. If it weren’t for him, we’d be dead.” I leaned in.
“I don’t know what the fuck they promised you that would make you betray us.” Pressing the nail gun against his bulging bicep, I flashed a grin.
“It doesn’t matter. You will die a very slow and very painful death.” I pulled the trigger.
His head shot back. “Ah,” Jessie hollered.
“That’s for almost killing me and my team. My beautiful woman sat beside me, and there was nothing I could do to save her. The horror in her eyes destroyed me. You don’t know what that’s like.” I breathed, slamming my gloved hand on the top of my bouffant cap.
Dad snatched the nail gun from my grip.
