CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO

LUCIANO

THURSDAY, I KNOCKEDon her door. It was a nice brick bungalow.

The door flew open and Melanie’s beautiful face appeared.

She hollered over her shoulder. “Bye, Mom.”

I held open the screen door and Melanie stepped toward me.

Minka’s chocolate face popped around the corner. “Hey, Luciano.”

I smiled. “Hello, Minka.”

Melanie stared between us. “How do you know my sister?”

“She’s the hostess at the restaurant.”

Melanie shook her head and laughed. “Oh, yeah. Sorry, I’m just nervous. We need to get out of here before my mother sees you.”

“Don’t worry, sis. I got your back.”

Minka ducked into the house and closed the door.

Melanie stopped mid step and her lips parted. “We’re going on a date in that car?”

“You don’t like Mercedes Benz?”

The white custom four door AMG Mercedes was a nice car.

“I think it’s a beautiful car. Not sure why I thought we’d ride in something a little more subtle.”

“Baby, I don’t do subtle!”

Twenty-five minutes later, we sat on the forty-fourth floor of a skyscraper overlooking the city. The restaurant turned slowly so customers could enjoy a different view of the city.

“This restaurant is beautiful. The view is spectacular.”

“I’m happy you like it.”

She stabbed the leafy green lettuce with her fork.

“Please tell me you eat steak and chicken?”

“Yes,” she laughed.

“When the waitress returns, I’ll order something more filling. I’ll try the salmon.”

“Yeah, that sounds better.”

I rubbed my sweaty palms over my thighs. What the heck was it about her that brought on this nervousness?

“Melanie, you’re so beautiful.”

“Thank you,” she blushed.

“I love our conversations. I can’t stop thinking about you. Every evening we spent together has brought a smile to my face.”
