Luciano picked up on the second ring.
“Hello?”
“Hey, Luciano. I need you and my dad to call me back on a secure line.”
“Yeah.” He disconnected the call.
Things around me still sounded farther away. I couldn’t wait for my hearing to return to normal.
The phone rang. I picked up quickly. “Hello?”
“Rocco, we’re here. What’s going on?” Dad asked.
My heart slammed against my ribcage. We’ve always had enemies, but I’ve never experienced a war.
“I learned we’re being watched. I was told someone wants what we have.”
They grumbled profanity on the line.
“Things went south after the package was mailed. We’re on high alert.”
“Fuck,” Luciano roared.
“We’re performing our own investigation then I’ll return home.”
“You can’t come home, Rocco. I’ll send the jet. Once you land in Philly, call me. I’ll tell you where to go.”
“Got it, Dad.”
“Genn will bring Art up to speed on the situation.”
“Good,” Luciano said.
“Rocco, tell Ercole to take care of Melanie. He’ll know what that means.”
Was it my awful hearing or did he sound a little shook? Like I said before, he loved that woman. Probably more than himself.
“One sec.” I held the phone away from my mouth.
“Ercole,” I called out.
He stalked down the hall toward me. “What’s up?”
“Luciano said to take care of Melanie.”
His eyes bulged. “Right away, boss,” Ercole shouted, so Luciano could hear him.
Luciano released a labored sigh.
Ercole ran down the hall to his room.
“Rocco, keep in touch,” Luciano stated.
“I will. But first, I need to speak to Ryah. Have her call me back.”
“Rocco, I swear if you tell my daughter where you are, I’ll ring your neck.”
“Hey, hey, Luciano, calm the fuck down. Stop threatening my son.”
