What would it taste like?

She’d see him tonight. Friday dinner at the Cow.

“Millie!”

She blinked and Trey’s face came into focus again. “Sorry, what?”

Trey’s amusement again crinkled the corners of his eyes. “I’d ask what you were daydreaming about, but I’m not sure I want to know. We’ll chat when I get back about that raise.”

Millie gasped and sat up straighter. He was serious.

“Thanks, Trey.”

He smiled kindly at her. “All good, Millie. I’d be lost without you. You manage the entire office. It’s time I paid you accordingly.”

She jumped up from her chair and hugged him tight. “You’re awesome.”

Trey laughed and shook his head. “It’s not often a beautiful woman tells me that.” He winked. “I’ll take what I can get.”

Millie rubbed his arm through his expensive suit. “You’re more fabulous than you know. Don’t worry, some gorgeous woman is going to come in here and sweep you off those expensive loafers of yours, and you won’t know what to do with yourself.”

Trey tucked the folder into his briefcase and shook his head, laughing. “I can only hope. See you when I get back.”

Millie waved as he left the building, the automatic doors sliding shut. She loved her job, loved the people it brought her into contact with. Trey was right, she was far more than his PA. She did everything in the office, barring consult. Although, considering how long she’d been here and taken notes, she probablycouldconsult on minor matters.

Maybe she should take him up on his offer of more training? She’d done a lot over the years, but hadn’t taken the law clerk step. Hadn’t really wanted to. She was happy doing what she did.

Although, if she and Max managed to make this work—make ababy—she’d have to rethink things.

A shiver coursed over her. A baby. Something that only a month ago had seemed nothing but a distant dream. She’d be able to do an early test from tomorrow.

Which brought her back to Max.

She grabbed her mug to go make herself a cup of tea, smiling.

Max.

Perhaps he’d be interested in more? Maybe if they got this baby thing to work out, he’d warm to something else? Friends with benefits. Casual sex, if she could bring herself to go there?

Maybe even a more permanent version of casual sex?

She flicked on the kettle and dumped tea leaves into her personal, handmade Japanese pot.

“Don’t get ahead of yourself there, Stevens. Small steps.”

She almost laughed. Baby steps.

She’d always liked Max, had always thought he was attractive, and sexy to boot. He’d been a salve on her broken soul after her break-up with Ryan, a break-up that should never have gotten to that point of pain. It was purely on her own head. She’d known what she was getting—the town playboy—but that hadn’t stopped her from thinking she could change him, thatshewas that one person to tame the untameable.

She huffed and shook her head. “You must think you have a mighty magic vagina, Millie.”

She let out a loud laugh at the thought of one of her favourite romance book tropes and poured the boiling water into her teapot.

Max had always been that friend who was always there, the stereotypical older brother who you could turn to about anything. But she’d also been well aware that Max had been grieving. Losing Lucy had rocked their entire group, even much of the population of town. Even her formidable Aunt Millie had adored Lucy.

And Max. He’d been inconsolable. Married for only four months.

Millie rubbed at her stinging eyes. Lucy had been so happy. She’d been head over heels in love with Max for ages, had been convinced he wasn’t interested, but then they’d shocked everyone with their engagement announcement.
