“Point?” I ask as he breaks his hold on me and runs to the driver’s side. I race him, since I am a competitive brat like that, even if I didn’t know we were playing a game.

Somehow, I make it to my seat before him. Perhaps he let me have this point.

“Good job!” He praises.

“What do you mean, points?” I say with a laugh.

“Tonight’s all about fun. That’s what I can bring to the table.” He revs the engine, then races out of the garage. He already opened the gate so he can blast past it.

“You don’t have to bring something to the table. Just be you. Okay?”

He glances at me and nods. I sense this is a sticky point for him. He’s feeling insecure in his place at my side. Ironically, I’m the one feeling out of my depth with three amazing, hot, smart, sexy guys craving to be with me.

We’re flying down the street and heading to the local boardwalk.

I see a Ferris wheel lit up. As we get closer, we find a carnival is in full swing.

Now his comment and the points game make sense.Fun. And I’m here for it.

“I can’t remember the last time I was at a carnival. Probably when I worked one as a psychic,” I say dreamily. The carnival was mostly a good job for the short time I traveled with it. There were a lot of rough guys, but surprisingly, they were more protective of me than anything else.

I laugh when he smacks his head like he’s dense.

“I should have known this wouldn’t be special.” He frowns. “This was a dumb idea, huh?”

“What?” I grab his arm and tug him to look at me. “I love it. I never got to experience it from the outside—like a regular person.”

When Kurtis sees the truth of it in my eyes, he lights up again. He leaps out of the car and runs around to help me with the door. He’s like a golden retriever. So excited and eager to please me.

He’s already bought our tickets, and we bypass the lines, not that they are that long. The carnival is perfectly attended. Just enough to make it feel like something is happening without having to fight to make our way through the corridors.

“What do you want to do first?” he asks, his eyes wide and sparkling with a childlike glee. He’s never looked more appealing.

When he’s enjoying himself and excited about life, he takes on an enthusiasm that’s contagious. And he might be right. This is part of what he brings to a relationship, but I know he will bring a whole lot more than just that.

My nose catches the savory aroma of the food trucks, and my stomach growls. “We could get a drink and something to munch on and walk around.”

“Brilliant!” Kurtis snatches my hand again, and we hurry over to a food truck window to grab something to eat.

We decide on the responsible choice for dinner—funnel cakes and cheap margaritas. Strolling through to check out the various booths and rides, we make a race of who can eat their funnel cakes faster. He wins that point, but I’m able to chug my drink first.

Coming toward a rowdy barker, the man taunts Kurtis about his prowess to get him to spend money at his game.

“Ring toss it is,” he says with an elbow bump against my arm. “I can win you something.”

“These games are all rigged. You must know that.” I laugh when he pays the carnie to play anyway.

“You don’t have your Instant powers either,” I remind him.

“Don’t need powers,” he says cockily.

I’m tempted to tell him the tricks of the trade, but decide it will be more fun to let him try on his own.

He tosses, shouting and jumping up and down the whole time.

And he loses. No shock there.

“See. I told you!” I pat him on the shoulder to mock console him. “Sorry you wasted your money there, buddy.”
