“And what kind of shenanigans would you get up to with that power?” Karma asks as she strolls into the room with a raised brow and a twinkle in her eye.

“I’d only use it for good, not evil,” Kurtis promises, crossing his fingers over his heart.

“I’m holding you to that.” She then considers us for a moment. “I think it’s time for your karma duties to begin.”

“Really?” Kurtis barks out happily.

“What does that mean?” Evan asks, ever the cautious one.

“Let’s gather everyone, and I can go over that at the same time,” she says, sweeping out of the room.

We meet at the gazebo, as we usually do for our group healing sessions.

Everyone is buzzing with excitement since William spread the word to the remaining four agents about what Karma said.

Karma lifts her hand, and the space falls dead silent, waiting for her to speak. “You all have been working on your healing. I see your souls repairing, with only a bit of help from me. I can see you’re ready for the next step of becoming my helpers.”

We glance at each other, unsure how this goddess will use us. I hope she is as benevolent as I wish her to be.

“Do not fret. The nature of karma is about learning and growing. And the various paths we can take on that journey.”

“But how do we help?” Kurtis asks, sounding like an excited kid.

“You will guide people, and at times, access the Akashic records to see what lessons they were meant to learn when they came to Earth. You will be called to assist when you are scheduled for duty. Do you all agree to see if this new job is a good fit for you?”

I’m afraid to say no in case we’re kicked out and sent on our way to death, but even if we were forced, I’d want to help others. When we were able to dole out positive instant karma, I always felt good. This seems like it might be very similar to what I had always hoped to do with my life.

We all give her a yes.

In turn, she slowly looks each of us in the eye. When she gets to me, a power rushes over my body and seeps into my heart. It feels so different from Instant’s magic. This is calm, embracing, and ancient.

It feels like I’ve found my calling in life.

FALLING

TESSA

Megan is on call for backup if I have any emergencies, but I’m finally working on my own.

For my lunch break, I pop back to the underworld from my last reap of a sixty-year-old man. I fall onto my bed to take a quick catnap in my Death’s dorm room before I have to get back to it.

My phone pings, and I crack one eye open to read it.

KURTIS: Hey, had a great time. Hope we can do something like that again soon.

TESSA: Me too. What about I take you somewhere next week?

KURTIS: Oh. You don’t want me to plan it?

Okay. That is weird. Maybe he’s more insecure than I realized.

TESSA: I loved our date. It was fabulous. I just wanted to do something for you. But I’m cool with you planning since you’re fantastic at it.

I see the response dots appear and disappear, then finally…

KURTIS: K
