“And?”

Flabbergasted, she shook her head.

“And…Christ, Jaeger, I’m not some whore you can pay with Adderall,” she mumbled, though there was no venom to her words. She was a nervous thing, a fidgety one. Scratching at his jaw, he formulated a way she could pay him back.

“Fine, toots. Two-fifty. I’ll give you two months since I know you’re always sobusy,” he mocked. Marie let out a breath, nodding as she stowed the contraband.

“Thanks, Jaeger.”

Frowning, he eyed her more closely. She was pretty, but she was lacking the spark Jaeger desired. Being young and wild, he didn’t quite understand yet what it was he was looking for. He was easily drawn in by a demure, truly innocent type, but he craved someone who was just as ferocious as he could be.

He needed a woman with a dual nature to compliment his own.

“Hey, umm…” Marie muttered, pulling him from his thoughts. She blinked up at him with eyes blue as his favorite pair of jeans. “Can…can ya do me a favor? I can pay more if you need, but—”

“Spit it out, Marie,” he drawled. Taking a deep breath, she calmed herself.

“My little sister, she’s a grade below us. You might know her—Maisie…umm, there’s this guy, ya see…”

Jaeger waited impatiently for this uptight broad to spit out her request, but her next words rankled him.

“She went to this party over the summer and he kissed her and she was drunk and now he keeps showin’ up and she doesn’t want daddy to find out because he’d kill ‘em both, and he—”

“Name.” Jaeger demanded. Marie swallowed hard and reddened some more. After a curt nod, she spoke.

“H-Hunter—”

“Jacobson?”

“Yeah…”

Jaeger snorted and shook his head. He knew that piece of shit well enough. Had split his lip and broke his nose last fall after Jaeger’d caught him sneaking pictures of Lindsay’s ass under the bleachers. Douche was a real perv, but it seemed Jaeger’s justice hadn’t been enough of a reminder.

“He hurt her?”

Marie’s blush and quick shake of her head was nothing more than a terrible lie.

“If ya want me to do somethin’, ya damn well better tell me the truth of it, toots.”

“Ugh, please don’t tell anyone? She’s already so shaken up.”

“Cross my heart.”

“He’s…just got these photos of her, from when she was wasted, and he keeps on comin’ by our house at night and watchin’ her, and I worry ‘bout him findin’ her dorm room and comin’ through the forest at night and—”

“I’ll take care of it.”

“You will?” Marie breathed, clearly in relief. Jaeger nodded once, turning his head to spit his wad of chew to the asphalt.

“Yeah, toots. I will.”

“How much?”

With a smirk and a wave of his hand, he pushed himself off her car for the final time. Backing away with a wink, he gave her his price.

“On the house. A perk of being a good customer.”

Marie visibly relaxed with a bright smile, and Jaeger could see the hint of beauty she kept hidden by her mask of rigidity. Turning on his heel, he made his way to the front office for his schedule and locks for his gym and school locker, all the while plotting exactly how he’d make good on his word.
