MICAH

Jeff wasn’t happy, but he decided not to press charges against me. Smart move on his part, since there were tons of witnesses hanging around ready to make a citizen’s arrest.

Now that everything’s settled, I’m driving her home. She’s not happy, but she’s safe and that’s all I’m concerned about. Asher’s driving my car and swapping it out for his. Lyric can give me a ride home before going to work because I’m not leaving her alone tonight.

The car’s barely in park when she unbuckles her belt and slams the door behind her. She realizes her mistake when she can’t open the front door since I have her keys. Beauty is exhausted and in desperate need of a good night’s sleep.

Holding out my hand, she snatches them away. Once it’s open, I expect her to slam the door in my face. She leaves it open. After closing the door behind me, she turns around and her furious gaze holds mine. She’s pissed but so fucking gorgeous.

“You had no business sticking your nose in where it doesn’t belong. I don’t need saving and I sure as hell don’t need a babysitter. Now Jeff thinks you’re the reason I filed for divorce.”

“I won’t apologize, Lyric. No one, not even an ex, has the right to put their hands on you and verbally abuse you. Under any circumstances. I’m no fucking knight in shining armor but I won’t just stand there and watch a man treat a woman with any disrespect. Whether it be you or a random woman sitting at the bar. Understand?” It’s not the first time I’ve stepped in between a domestic dispute, and it won’t be my last.

Defeated, she crashes on the sofa and just stares up at me. We’re at a standoff so I decide to break the ice.

In a few short strides I sit down but leave plenty of space in between us. There’s so much I want to tell her, but this isn’t the right time. Leaning against the back of the sofa, I ask, “What are you thinking, Beauty?”

A big sigh and then she responds. “As a parent, I always thought raising my daughter was my biggest accomplishment. After tonight, not so much. I just found out that she’s skipped out on the both of us. I can’t help wondering how long it’s been going on.”

“I’m not a parent, but I do have very clever nieces and nephews who do it all the time. Just because Novalee is eighteen doesn’t mean she’s outgrown the fact that she can still push your buttons. Her dad’s, too. Hell, my siblings and I did it all the time. Didn’t you?”

A small smile threatens but she keeps it in check. “I did and it drove my mother nuts. Novalee and I used to be close, but like her father she blames me for the divorce. In her eyes, her father can do no wrong so it’s a losing battle. I was hoping to spend some time with her before she leaves for college.”

Unfortunately, I can’t give her any advice since I’ve never walked in her shoes. On the other hand, I’m sure she’s feeling the loss even if Novalee hasn’t left yet. It’s the dreaded empty nest syndrome. I’ve heard my mother mention it a million and one times.

“Why didn’t you just call me, Lyric?” I know she pretends to be independent, but the truth is she hasn’t worked in years. So juggling all of these responsibilities on her own must be taking its toll. And she’s too damn proud to ask for help. She’s stubborn just like all of the other women in my life.

Standing up, she walks into the kitchen. God help me because I’m fixated on her ass that’s swaying with every step. I will my cock to behave but it’s too late. He has a mind of his own.

I contemplate following her but decide against it. After everything that happened, she might need a moment alone. Tonight, I’m here as a friend and not a lover. Contrary to what my dick is thinking.

“I went to unwind and have a few drinks,” she says. “What were you doing there?” I’m thrilled she’s not kicking me out when she hands me a glass of wine. Not my first choice, but I gladly take it as a peace offering. I take a sip of the fruity liquid and decide it’s not too bad.

“Asher stopped by, and I decided he needed a diversion. He’s newly divorced and just found out his ex is engaged. Now he thinks she was cheating on him all along.”

“Hmm, it sounds like his story is very similar to mine. Your hand looks swollen. Let me get you some ice.”

“Not necessary. I’m good.” I’d like to add that it was well worth it to see the fucker hit the floor.

“Maybe it’s best if you leave. After what happened, Novalee could be home at any minute. I’m sure she’d tell Jeff you were here.” Like I give two fucks.

“I’m not leaving, Beauty. Your ex was pissed, and he could show up here at any minute to pick up where he left off. Not happening.”

“Jeff knows better than to come here. I’m fine, really. It’s getting late and since I need to get up for work in the morning, I must insist.”

“On one condition.” When she nods, I continue. “That he doesn’t have access to this house.”

“I promise he can’t come in.”

“Most people hide a key outside their home. Do you? Is it still in the same spot? Are you absolutely positive he gave you all his keys? If he asked, do you think Novalee would give him one?” Her mouth opens and closes before answering. I know why. She can no longer keep her promise.

“I understand your concern, but even if he did he wouldn’t dare come in. That’s per the rules of our divorce.”

“Maybe, but what if he did? I don’t know him but tonight he came unhinged for no apparent reason. Other than he thought Novalee was spending time with you. If I walk out that door tonight and I found out something happened to you…”

Setting her wine on the table, she moves closer. “If I thought Jeff was a threat, I’d let you stay. I promise. He’s always been verbally abusive, not physical. Tonight was the exception to the rule. Take my car and we can exchange them sometime tomorrow.”

“Only if I can pick you up in the morning and you can drop me off since it’s on your way.” Then we’ll know where each other lives.
