I woke the next morning, feeling more rested than I had in a long time. Feeling like a human instead of a zombie.
I sat up in bed and stretched, enjoying the bliss that comes from waking up naturally instead of being awoken by an alarm or a crying baby…
Wait.
I looked at the time on my watch.
It was seven twenty-three in the morning.
I had just slept for, like, nine hours straight.
Evelyn!
I jumped out of my bed and rushed down the hall to her and Jaxon’s room. She always woke up at least once or twice during the night.
Had something happened to her?
Was she okay?
But when I walked into her room, my daughter wasn’t the first human I saw. Instead, I found Emerson curled up under the covers on Jaxon’s bed.
She’d stayed over?
A happy, squealing sound stole my attention next. And when I stepped up to the side of the crib, I found a very alert and very happy baby girl looking up at me with a smile. She kicked her legs when she saw me watching her and made gurgling sounds as if excited to see me.
I couldn’t help but smile right back at her.
Being cute really was a survival skill for babies for all the trouble they sometimes caused.
Before she could make any more sounds that might wake Emerson, I picked Evelyn up and carried her out of the room, shutting the door behind me.
“Should we go change your diaper in the living room?” I asked Evelyn, holding her against my side as we walked down the hall.
She, of course, didn’t answer since she couldn’t talk, but I took her to the basket of diapers and wipes I kept in the living room to change her, anyway.
That was when I noticed something. My front living area that had been a complete wreck the night before was spotless. It even smelled fresh and clean.
I realized that not only had Emerson taken over the night duty with Evelyn last night so I could get nine hours of uninterrupted sleep, but she had also washed the dishes, taken out the trash, and folded the pile of laundry I’d been meaning to get to for days.
Was she a superhero?
Because that woman put me to shame.
I was just feeding Evelyn her rice cereal in her highchair when Jaxon came running down the hall.
“Good morning, buddy,” I said, looking at him after Evelyn took a bite from her cereal.
“Hi, Dad.” He ran over and gave me a hug. “I sleeped so good in your bed.”
“That’s good.” I smiled, messing up his hair with my hand. “I slept good too.”
He pulled away. Then he seemed to notice something was different about the living room and kitchen because he suddenly exclaimed, “It’s beautiful in here!” There was a look of shock on his face.
“It is beautiful isn’t it?” I chuckled. “I think your mommy did it for us.”
