Chapter Thirteen
“Do you want one of us to come with you?” Aleena asked.
She looked at each of her friends. Would she ever see these wonderful women again? God, her mind was so muddled that she couldn’t decide.
Kinley took her hand. “I can go with you.”
She shook her head. “No. I want you to get back before the daddies know. If you got in trouble for me, I’d feel bad. I’ll go up and meet her.”
“We’ll stay here until you wave to us,” Nia said. “If you go inside and want to stay, peek out and wave.”
“If I don’t come out in ten minutes, go. I can always call you guys if I need to leave,” Casey said.
She hugged them all tightly before getting out. She walked up the porch and turned to smile at her friends before knocking. It took a minute for the door to open, and her heart sank when she saw the tight-lipped woman in front of her.
“Aunt Janice?”
The woman scowled harder. “Oh, so here is the little shameful, lazy niece. Come in.”
Casey stepped in and then jumped when the door closed behind her.
“What’s your excuse for being late and not even calling me?” the woman said and crossed her arms over her chest.
“I’m sorry. I got in an accident. It was bad. My car is totaled, and I was in the hospital. I called my parents so they know.”
One of her eyebrows rose. “You look fine to me.”
Casey had to hold her hands tightly against her body to keep them from shaking. She did raise one for a moment to move her hair off her forehead. “See, I have stitches. I have them in other places, too.”
Janice rolled her eyes. “My word, I’ve had a broken arm before and took care of myself just fine.”
Every second that ticked by, the dread grew in her core.
“Well, let me show you your room. It’s not much, but it has a bed. I already have a long list of things you need to get done. If I see you getting lazy, I will take a stick to you. ‘Spare the rod, spoil the child.’ I’ll get you in shape before too long.”
Janice made a face of distaste. “And the stuffed thing coming out of your bag needs to be disposed of. Give it to me, and I’ll take care of it.”
Casey took a step back, closer to the door. “So, anyway, I just came to tell you what happened, but I can’t stay.”
Janice looked outraged. “But your parents want you here.”
“It’s my choice since I’m an adult.”
The old woman’s face darkened even more. It was a terrifying image to see and would probably give her nightmares.
Casey opened the door. “It was nice meeting you. I have some friends waiting for me.”
Janice came to the door and hissed. “Oh, really, your friends? Your mother didn’t tell me you were a slut.”
Casey twirled to see Simon leaning against his car with his arms crossed over his chest.
“Go! I can’t have a slut in this house,” Janice barked. “You’re sinful, and you’ll pay for it in purgatory.”
The sight of Simon startled Casey, and she almost fell back. She turned to look at her aunt one more time and saw the hate-filled look on her face. “I hope you have a nice life.”
The woman pointed at Simon. “Go! I can’t stand the sight of you. I’d never allow such a sinful slut in my house.”
