“Or my high-ass friend.”

“What was that?”

“Nothing.”

Mr. Jones side-eyed her.

“Okay, so I got a little high.”

“Marijuana only, right?” Concern filled his eyes.

“Dad, of course. I would never do anything else. And really, this was a fluke.”

He held his hand up. “You don’t have to explain that to me. I get it.”

“You do?”

“Yeah, I was young with problems once upon a time too. Now I’m just old with problems. Probably need to get me a joint or something.”

“Oh, no, you don’t.”

They both laughed as they strolled to the front door. Looking out, Mr. Jones nodded his head.

“There’s your mother.”

London opened the door and threw a hand up, waving.

A horn blew, and Mrs. Jones waved back.

“Thank you for stopping by, Dad. It means everything to me.”

“And you mean everything to me. Now, make sure to have a good night.”

He leaned in for a hug, kissing London on her cheek.

“Good night, Daddy.”

“Good night, baby girl.”

She watched him until he was in the car and her parents were headed down the street before closing the door.

Sighing, she said a silent prayer, then went to find her fiancé.
