Chapter Three
“Oh, my God.” Drea’s wide eyes were stuck in their bulging position after taking in everything Vanessa had disclosed. “What are you going to do?”
Vanessa pulled her wrist to eye level and glanced down at her watch.
“We have a little time before you speak to Mrs. Capone if that’s what you’re worried about.” Drea motioned for Vanessa to address her thoughts with a flip of her hands.
“I…” Vanessa shrugged. “Actually, I don’t know.”
“Are you considering it?”
Vanessa leaned her head side to side. “Yes.”
Drea’s jaw was practically on the floor.
“You would jump into a spontaneous marriage with someone you don’t know?!”
“Ssssh!”
Drea cupped her mouth as a shimmer of excitement flooded her body.
“I’m not judging, by the way. I’m just…well…a little taken aback while also wanting to see this thing play out. It’s kinda hot.”
“You speak as if this is a black love cinema that you and your girls are about to kick in and watch with wine.”
“We just might have to.”
Vanessa pursed her lips. “Excuse me?”
“If you allow me to record, then it’s a done deal.”
“Please tell me you’re joking.”
Drea laughed. “I am.” She hesitated. “Unless you’re game.”
Vanessa sank her hands into her hips. “Why would I be open to something as crazy as that?”
“Hey, it’s not crazy. It’s spontaneous.” She smiled.
Vanessa couldn’t help but chuckle. “You’re a hopeless romantic, aren’t you, Drea?”
“How can you tell?”
“It’s oozing from your pores. And I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but…”
Drea’s forehead creased as she frowned. “Ma’am, wait a minute. You can’t bear bad news after telling me this. Bad news will take me completely out of a romantic fairytale.”
“Except fairytales aren’t real. They’re made-up fantasies that have us all swooning and hoping to God one day we could find that Prince Charming—only to be dogged by Kevins.”
Drea’s forehead creased even more. “Ahhh. This is about an old flame, isn’t it?” She chuckled. “Well, I’ll tell you one thing. Fuck Kevin. I don’t know him, but it sounds like he could get the middle finger. Anyway. Girl, the reality is, we will always run into more toads then princes—but ba-baee, when we find our charming, the last thing we’ll do is disregard him because of Kevin’s weak ass.”
Vanessa couldn’t hold back her laugh, chuckling so hard tears filled her eyes.
“Oh, my goodness, you are crazy.” Her laugh subsided. “Thanks for the laugh.”
“There’s more where that came from, and besides, while you might not be as hopeless of a romantic as me, you are definitely open to it.”
“Maybe I’m looking at this thing as a business transaction. They say that’s what marriage is about these days anyway, right?”
