“We almost did,” Armstrong continues, looking at Lee. “But Josh thought you might’ve been stuck somewhere where there was no mobile reception. He mentioned you had another appointment on your first day.”
Carolyn flashes a glance at me. So Josh had told lies to these men.
Lee then says, “We couldn’t believe it when we heard you radio in asking for clearance to land.”
“I’ve prepared the revised proposal. The numbers are very close to what you sent to Josh. I’ll email it to you later tonight,” Carolyn says.
“Did he realize he’d had a duplicate item in his first proposal?” Armstrong lifts a corner of his mouth.
“Yes, he did. Apologies for that.”
Lee responds with a grin, “His name might be Bright, but sometimes we wonder what he’d do without you. I’m glad you’re alright, Miss Meyer.”
They wrap up their conversation, and the men leave.
“What are you gonna do about Josh?” I ask Carolyn nervously when she’s back sitting next to me.
Her brows knit.
“You’ve gotta call him,” I say.
“I will. First, I need a plausible story. I don’t want him to know I’ve uncovered him.”
Her phone buzzes. In fact, it has been buzzing since we reached Bozeman.
“Missed calls. God, I’ve never had so many. But it felt so good not having to answer them.”
“You’ll have to answer them at some stage. Especially from that fiancé of yours.”
She rolls her eyes. “I know, Levi.”
“Do you think those men will tell Josh that they saw you here with me?”
“Maybe. But I have a feeling they don’t really trust Josh. Maybe that was why that loser sent me here.”
“Call him,” I insist.
She reluctantly dials her phone. “Josh, it’s me.”
“Carolyn! Are you okay?” I can hear Bright’s voice. “Where are you? Tell me what the hell is going on!”
“I’m fine. I’m at Bozeman Hospital.”
“Why didn’t anyone tell me?”
“I asked them not to. I’ll tell you everything when I’m back.”
“Jesus, Caro! You’re too much. Come home, please. Now.”
“I’ve gotta go.”
“Now, Caro!”
She hangs up and turns to hug me. “God, Levi, I really don’t want to go back.”
I simply hold her tight. After seeing her interactions with Josh at Brilliance, I thought of Carolyn as an alpha female. I never guessed she would be scared of her fiancé, or any man. But she is now.
