Page 34 of Burning for You

Who hired him? A sick feeling creeps into my chest. I’m hardly wrong when it comes to instinct.

Montana. It’s got to be something about Montana. I’m meeting the people at Bozeman Airport the day after tomorrow. Perhaps I can craft an inquiry to get a sense of what’s really going on.

I text my trusted, newly appointed assistant security manager at Sass.

Rhea, sorry to contact you so late. Can we chat?

She replies: Sure. Should I call you?

I call her.

“Rhea, thanks for this.”

“Don’t mention it. I’m just playing Diablo 3, and I’m losing anyway. How can I help?”

“Can I have your discretion?”

“Of course.”

“Could you please run a search for me? I’m sending you some camera footage. There’s a young man in a white shirt and black tie.”

“I’m opening it now, Caro,” Rhea says. “Oh…”

I catch a hint of surprise. “Do you know him?”

“No, no. Can I ask for your discretion?”

I frown but I say yes.

“He’s so handsome!”

“Oh, Rhea,” I chuckle.

“Sorry. I know this is serious, just a silly comment. What do you need?”

“Anything you can find. His name, address, family, work.”

“Right away. Is there anything I need to worry about? Is he threatening you?”

“No! I just need to know who he is.”

“Alright. I’ll text you when I get something.”

I quickly pack up my phone and laptop, as I hear Josh coming.

“Hey, how are you feeling?”

“I’m okay. Was everybody okay? Are you okay?”

He sits next to me. “Of course I am. The dinner went on as planned, Suzanne took over. I told her you weren’t feeling well. It looked like the drunk had played with the switch.”

“I see,” I deadpan, but inside my heart is fluttering.

“Unfortunately he was gone when we started searching, and the security footage was too dark to catch anyone.”

He.So they only suspected one?

A text comes through from Rhea, but I ignore it.
