She’s surprised when I get out and walk her to her door, but seems grateful for it. Her doorman doesn’t seem to be around, so I step into the foyer.
“I’m just making sure you get in safe,” I explain.
“Thank you, I appreciate that, Joey.”
We stop at the elevator. Meg doesn’t press to call it. “Thank you. I had a nice time.”
“Me too. We should do it again.”
Meg’s throat works as she swallows. Her head ducks and I kick myself. Did I misstep here?
“That would be good,” she says, her shoulders pressing back, more determination in her voice. “If it’s not too weird, I mean, with us training together.”
“It’s not weird at all,” I give her a big smile. “I’m happy to go out again, and to go wherever you want, at whatever pace. It’s all good.”
Her eyes widen, but she no longer looks nervous. She turns and presses the call button. From the display, it’s on seven, so will take a while to get to the ground floor.
I turn to watch her. Her head is tilted so she can see the numbers, her lips moving. At first, I think she’s counting the floors, but that is not the case.
She takes a deep breath in and turns to me. Then takes a step towards me. I stand still, but don’t take my eyes off her. She places her hand on my forearm and goes up on her toes. I’m way too tall for her to reach anything, so I duck slightly, and shekisses my cheek.
Fuck. I feel like a damn teenager on his first date, but I’m cool with that. She smiles at me again as the elevator doors open.
“See you tomorrow.”
“Yeah. Eleven,” I grin. She returns it, then steps onto the elevator.
I stand there for a good five minutes after she’s gone. I’m not sure if this is something I should pursue. Is she ready to move on? I’ve attracted more than my fair share of women over the years.
My college days were wild and being a champion fighter brings them out of the woodwork, like Angelina said, fight whores, I guess. Though calling them that doesn’t sit right with me.
I like a confident woman who goes after what she wants. It’s the clingers that get irritating. I’m up front, I let them know ahead of time I’m not the relationship type.
One day I’d like to settle down, but I never thought I was ready for that.
Meg isn’t like those other women. She needs to be treated gently, take things slowly. And ultimately, it may never work out.
But for the first time, I kind of want to see where it goes.
I’m whistling again as I head out to the car. I’ve never felt this happy about not getting laid before.
It’s really fucking weird. But I like it.
