After the session is over, I bite my tongue and eat my words from earlier. The smirk on her face is as beautiful as she is. “If you weren’t so pretty, I’d be angry right now.”
“Well, if you weren’t so stubborn, you would have learned your lesson earlier. Now, are you going to listen to me?”
“Yes.”
“Last time, this is what set you back. The doctors told me that you ended up back in the hospital because you were overdoing it. We’re going to take each step day by day and I don’t want you to give me shit over it because I’m not going to be responsible for you killing yourself trying to prove that you’re tough. You had any aortic tear. It needs to heal properly before you can go all macho again. Do we understand each other?”
“I do, gorgeous.” I’m not sure what came over me today. Just this yesterday I was cursing out my ex and scorning the entire sex for their evil ways, and yet I find my beautiful nurse absolutely captivating.
“Good, now excuse me. I need to go home and write up my notes. Would it be okay if I saw you at the same time on Wednesday and Friday, or would a different time be better?”
“This time is perfect.”
Chapter Two
Jacqueline
I count down the days on my planner; four weeks down, only two more weeks of this. Six weeks of touching Evan Sager’s strong, muscular body, feeling the tingling sensation all over my body like it’s no big deal because I’m a professional. Six weeks of talking to a man whose voice sense shivers through my body and whose eyes pierce right through me. That’s all I’ve been tasked with doing, but somehow it seems like more than I can handle.
I drive over to the Sager residence and my heart picks up its pace as I get closer. It’s insane how this man has my organs getting a workout. My heart muscle works as much as his does. When I pull up to the driveway, he comes out with his coffee in hand, smirking at me. He’s not the most stubborn patient I’ve ever had, but most of the ones I’ve seen have been in the office and none have had a pull on me to the point that I’d cross boundaries, break rules for.
“Mr. Sager…”
“What did I tell you about calling me Evan?” he challenged, growling with a deep timber. This man doesn’t give you the impression that he suffered a heart attack or that he has had a damn scratch on his body. His dark hair has a few hints of gray, but it’s few and far between. I think I’m grayer, and his body…goodness.
The man’s body is built so well that it should be a crime. After every session, I have to go home and shower away the lust. At six-three, his form is wide until you reach his waist then it narrows to the hips, flaring at the thighs and calves. You can tell that he used to work in the orchards and not just in the office. Every time my hand went over his taut muscles a lowgroan passed his lips, and my thighs would clench up. I hoped he couldn’t smell the need radiating off me.
Trying to gain my equilibrium, I reminded him that he had to limit his caffeine. “What did I tell you about the coffee?”
“I’ve only had one cup, Lynn.” I like it when he calls me that.
“That’s fine, but I’m watching you, Mister.”
“How are you feeling this morning?” I ask like I do every morning that I’m here.
“Great, now that you’ve arrived.” And that’s his usual response.
“You won’t be saying that when I leave.”
“That’s because you like to make me pay for my mouth. One damn comment almost a month ago and you haven’t let it go.”
“No, it’s called rehab, Evan,” I answer, giving him a wink and walking into the room. The lovely farmhouse is spacious, but they set up a workout and massage area for him.
“So, are you seeing anyone?”
“I see people all the time. I have two working eyes,” I answer, knowing damn well what he’s asking.
“You are a smart ass.”
“So is my brain and no, I haven’t had a boyfriend in a while. It’s why I took this traveling gig.”
“What happened?”
God, Alex and I were great until we weren’t. A perfect couple to the world and on paper until he changed his mind about our future. I sighed. “I wanted a family, and he didn’t.”
“Oh. That’s definitely a deal breaker in relationships.” I read him loud and clear. He’s done having kids, which is understandable since he’s twenty years older than me.
“I’m sure, but you got that with your girls.”
