I snort. “Are they? I never noticed.”

She leans back and stares a hole through my cheek. “Sure. Your face isn’t red at all.”

“Be quiet,” I grit out. “We’re ready to go,” I tell Lachy.

“Shotgun!” April calls, then runs to the passenger side of the car.

Ryan steps up next to me. “I like this new arrangement... Peaches sandwich.”

“Ryan...”

“I know, I know.” He lifts his hands up. “No shenanigans. We’re just friends. But you are riding in the middle.”

He’s sporting a crooked grin as he opens the door. I look at Katrina and find her trying to suppress a smile. “I’ll see you tomorrow, June.”

“Bye. Thanks for everything.”

I can’t bail on my students to take April to see my OB/GYN. I’ll have to take her during my lunch break, which means she needs to come to school with me. They do say when it rains, it pours. I’m looking forward to a long, drama-free period.

I wonder how long I’ll have to wait.

CHAPTER 15

JUNE

Ryan promised he would be on his best behavior, but a few minutes into the drive back home, he touches my knee, making me jump a little. I look at him and whisper. “What are you doing?”

He smiles like a fiend. “Nothing.”

Lachy has the radio on pretty loud, so I doubt he or April can hear us.

I narrow my eyes, and then push his hand off my knee. “You’re bad.”

His brows shoot up. “What? I’m an angel.”

Jake snorts. “Yeah. Lucifer.”

April lowers the music and turns to look at us. “What are you guys talking about?”

“Nothing,” I reply through clenched teeth.

“Have you ever been to LA, April?” Jake asks.

“No. This is my first time, but I won’t be staying long. I just came to check on June. I was so worried about her after what Bill did.”

God. She had to bring him up. What happened at the game feels like eons ago. I spent ten years with the guy, but now, my time with him is nothing but a blip. He’s not worth a secondof my thoughts. I’m annoyed she mentioned him, even though that’s her excuse for being in LA.

“You could have called,” I retort.

She gives me a meaningful glance. “Well, I needed to see you in person. It’s easy to lie and say you’re fine over the phone.”

“It’s sweet of you to check on her in person,” Lachy pipes up.

“I know! Thank you for recognizing the awesome sister that I am.”

I fight the urge to roll my eyes. I’m the one being the awesome sister. “Way to toot your own horn, April.”

She sticks her tongue out at me, then looks at Lachy. “How did you end up becoming friends with my boring sister?”
