Lorenzo’s eyes jumped between the two of us. “So, we’re just gonna ignore that all of his lovers died from a heart attack, and you could’ve had one before the crash?”
“A heart attack caused your crash?” Kuroi asked surprised.
“I did not have a heart attack! Or a panic attack. Or anything else!”
“Then why did you run into a tree?” Kuroi asked with concern shaping his tone.
“I felt a pinch in my neck moments before I blacked out. The working theory is that someone shot me.”
“Let me guess,” Kuroi replied, “The only person you know who could make that shot is your brother, Matteo?”
I looked at Lorenzo for a way out of this. I didn’t get one.
“Yeah.”
“I can find out for you?” Kuroi said casually.
“What?”
“Get me in the same room with him. I can find out if he was the one who tried to kill you.”
“You are not torturing my brother!” I said feeling protective rage.
“Geez, calm down. I didn’t say anything about torturing him. I just need to talk to him. Where can we do it?” he asked enthusiastically.
Kuroi was serious and excited. What made him think he could find out something like that? Sure, Matteo wasn’t the most sophisticated person I knew, but my brother knew how to keep his mouth shut.
When I didn’t reply, Kuroi added, “Come on, put me in the same room as him. I’ll find out for you.”
When Lorenzo and I remained silent he mentioned, “You’re my husband. We’re going to end up in the same room together eventually. So, sooner or later, it is going to happen. And if it happens after he’s killed you, I would have to kill him.”
“Come on, Dante, you would be saving two lives here,” Lorenzo joked.
I leaned back in my office chair and thought. Kuroi wasn’t wrong. They were gonna end up in the same room eventually. And something told me Kuroi wasn’t going to let this go. Maybe it was better if I had control over how and where it happened.
“Matteo had suggested the three of us having dinner together.”
“Wait, I thought we were supposed to have dinner together first,” Lorenzo reminded me.
“Ah, that’s so sweet,” Kuroi cooed. “And if you’re ever suspected of killing my husband, believe me, I would be the first person you would see,” he said in more threatening baby voice than I thought possible.
“Luckily, we don’t have to worry about that, because Lorenzo is the most loyal brother I have.”
“Let’s hope so. So, when do I get to meet the traitor?”
“We don’t know he’s a traitor. We don’t even know if our father is making a move against me.”
“Then it’s time to find out. Set up the dinner and let me know when. I’ll prepare a meal fit for my king,” he said getting up and heading to the door.
“Actually, I’ll set it up at Maramar. They have a cannoli you have to try.”
Kuroi, who had his hand on the knob, looked back at me. It was obvious that I was choosing a public setting to limit the extracurricular actives by either of them. I half expected Kuroi to insist, but he didn’t. I guess that only meant I had three things to punish him for, the third being speaking when he said he wouldn’t.
“Arrange it for tonight,” Kuroi said relenting.
“It will be for tomorrow night. We have plans tonight,” I told him showing my displeasure with my eyes.
Looking back at me, he nearly whimpered. “Oh right, our plans. I’ll be dressed and ready when you get home.”
