“Is he around?” I asked.

“No. They delivered our missing furniture this morning. He stayed behind to get started unpacking it. But, back to you, Nero. What’s going on?”

“I just had a conversation with Dr. Tom.”

“What did he say?” Cage asked as his eyes met mine.

“You know him. He can’t say now. We have to meet him back at his office.”

Cage’s eyes left mine and focused on something behind Nero and me. “Looks like he leaving now.”

“Do you think we can trust anything he says?” Nero asked suddenly creating a knot in my stomach.

“You can if what he finds is in his interest,” Cage confirmed.

“And how would we know if he’s not manipulating us?”

“I know you two are pissed at him. And I would be to if he had kept information like that from me. But he’s not what you’re making him out to be,” Titus insisted.

“You mean he’s not a Fae who covered up Cage being stolen from the hospital by a dragon shifter and then allowed me to believe that my mother was insane for not believing he was dead?” Nero asked.

“You gotta look at things from his perspective. He was protecting the hospital. If that news got out, it would have shut it down sooner than they did. And after it did close down, he moved here and became the only doctor around for miles. What would we do if we didn’t have him?”

Nero and Cage looked at each other. Nero wasn’t giving an inch and neither was Cage.

“Anyway, I guess we’ll head over there and see what it is that he doesn’t tell us this time,” Nero said leading us away.

“I’ll see you back at home,” Cage replied before leaving with Titus.

“Do you really think Dr. Tom could lie about what I am?” I asked suddenly feeling uneasy about the whole thing.

“I don’t know,” Nero replied. “I just know he’s kept things from me before.”

I thought about that as we drove back to Quin’s neighborhood. The driveway we eventually turned into lead to another impressive house. Like Quin’s place, it was filled with small town charm. More than that, there was something about it that made me feel at home.

“Are you ready for this?” Nero asked as I stared through the windshield at it.

“Yeah,” I said though I wasn’t sure if I was.

What would it mean if I found out that I was like Nero? There was no way I could forget seeing him shift into a wolf. And what would it mean for us if I found out I was something else? I could end up being something I’ve never heard of. Or, maybe I was nothing at all. Would Nero feel the same way about me if I was just a human who didn’t have sweat glands?

Nero led me out of the truck and around the side of the house to what looked like a quaint guest house. We entered and as soon as we did, I felt it. I wasn’t sure what it was, but it was strong.

“Do you feel that?” I asked whispering to Nero as we stood in the waiting room.

“My blood boiling?”

“No. It’s something I can’t explain. It’s like the feeling you have when the hairs on your arm stand up.”

I looked down at my arms.

“But, they’re not.”

Before Nero could reply, the man from the field opened a door and stepped out.

“You can come in,” he said pointing at me. “Nero, you can wait out here.”

My chest quickly clenched.
