“Because I don’t want just sex from you, Iris. You’re the love of my fucking life!”

She presses her hands to her eyes. “Trevor, I need more time to think this through.”

“You didn’t before. At the beginning. From the day we met, it was–”

“Well, it’s not the beginning! This would be a second chance, and that requires more time than just–”

I laugh. It just slips out. I don’t really mean to, but the second it rumbles through me, I regret it.

Iris’s eyes fill with flame. “Is it funny to you? That I have been in pain all this time?”

I step toward her. “Honey, no, that’s not–”

Iris backs away immediately. “Don’t call me honey.”

Pulling at my hair, I try to catch my breath. “How did we get here? We had such a beautiful night, and now we’re–”

“Because you’re rushing me! You’re trying to make up for lost time all at once instead of realizing that we are still a question mark, Trevor.”

“We’re not. To me we’re not.”

“Well, to me we are.”

I scoff. “Un-fucking-believable. Now I’m the bad guy here.”

“I admitted fault. I know I shouldn’t have taken the job without talking to you, and I apologize, but that was six months ago and if you don’t understand we have work to do if this is going to be a thing again–”

“Athing?!”

Iris holds up her hands. “I just need more than an apology. I need time. I didn’t think that would be hard to understand, but–” She shakes her head and murmurs, “I can’t do this with you.”

Then, she storms out of the room.

I follow her, close behind. “Don’t walk away.”

“You’re purposefully misunderstanding everything I’m saying, and I can’t do this with you. I have a plane to catch.”

She’s walking away.Running. I can’t let this happen, I can’t, but I’m so fired up, so hurt.

I run up to the door ahead of her so she can’t escape without facing me. “Iris, if you leave, you’re making a mistake.”

She places her hands on her hips. “Is that an ultimatum?”

“As if I could ever get you to do anything with an ultimatum.”

“Drive me away, maybe.” She holds her chin high.

Perhaps we haven’t come as far as I thought we have this week. Perhaps the hate we’ve both been harboring has been here all along. “I made a mistake. You’re right. It’s not love.”

“Don’t be cruel, Trevor.”

“I’m not, I’m trying to make it easier for you to go. I don’t love you. Don’t need you to figure out how to love me. Because it’s over.” I cross my arms over my chest. “Does that make leaving easier?”

Iris shakes her head. “You’re the same. If it’s notyourway, it can’t be anything. Why are you so fucking stubborn?!”

“Takes one to know one.”

Iris rolls her lips together and gestures to the door. “Let me leave.”
