CHARLOTTE

AZIEL LOOKS UP as I shove my way into his office, and he raises his hand in a gesture for me to remain silent while he finishes his conversation. I pin my lips together and sit on his couch, bouncing excitedly.

His eyebrows furrow as he yells at whomever he’s speaking to, his words transitioning into the demonic language as his anger grows. It sounds so angry, full of hard consonants and abrupt cut-offs.

I feel bad for the other person on the line, Aziel’s tone a reminder of why I was so terrified of him when we first met.

Aziel can be scary when he wants to be.

He slams his phone down with a low grunt before straightening and turning to me. Grinning, he gestures for me to come over as if his angry conversation never happened, and I raise a brow before sliding to his desk.

I sit on the corner of it and swing my legs over his.

“You smell like Silas,” he comments.

I dip my head, flushing. I know he heard everything that happened back in the library.

“The shifters will be here soon,” I say, glancing at the clock with a nervous sigh.

The shifters are not excited about the number of demons Aziel had to send to their land in order to teleport them here, and they’ve been changing the meetup location what feels like every hour. Kato’s been working hard to have the meeting spot on the wolf lands, his grudge toward them growing the more they push him to allow Echo out to find her mate.

The alpha there is convinced she’s his, apparently having smelled her on Kato once.

Kato doesn’t believe it, naturally, but I think he’s just scared to see her leave. Echo doesn’t seem particularly excited about finding her mate yet, either. She calls herself a “free bear” and insists any mate of hers would try to take away her sticks.

“And the Ucka’s all prepared?” I ask, desperate for everything to be perfect.

We’re going to show the shifters the facility before returning here for dinner. Aziel and Gray got fresh Ucka to eat, and I think the shifters will enjoy it. It’s one of their favorites.

I jump when Aziel’s office door swings open, and I spin just in time to watch Gray and Silas storm inside. Well, Gray does the storming. Silas walks in calmly behind him.

“All right, let’s go,” Gray says, clasping his hands together.

My legs accidentally knock against Aziel’s shins as I jump off the desk and straighten my clothing. I didn’t realize they were coming. Whenever I ask Silas or Gray to join us, they say no with some shitty excuse before running away to hide.

I thought this would be the same, so I didn’t bother asking.

“You’re coming?” I ask, not caring how evident my excitement is.

Silas acts as if everything in the library didn’t just happen as he walks past me and checks the schedule I’ve drawn out for today. The paper is sitting on Aziel’s desk, and he scans it before giving an approving hum and handing it to Gray.

“Yes, we think it’d be best to show a unified front. If not for the shifters, then for the Wraths,” Silas explains. “This will be their first time meeting you, and we’d like to ensure they know we’re one.”

His referring to us as “one” has my heart doing backflips, and I turn to hide my smile. Does this mean he’s coming around?

Silas glances at me, his eyes darting to my slightly curled lips before he clears his throat and looks away. I just about burst into tears as I watch his mouth form a breathtaking smile. It’s with teeth and everything.

“Who’s taking me?” Gray asks, looking between Silas and Aziel.

Aziel grabs my bicep. “I’ll take Charlie.” There’s a possessive note in his voice that I’m unfamiliar hearing used with Gray or Silas.

Even Gray looks taken aback, and he reaches for Silas with a scoff.

“I didn’t want you to take me, anyway,” Gray says.
