“Naughty.” He threaded another needle and started his own garland. “If you eat all the popcorn, we won’t have any left to decorate and you’ll spoil your supper.”
In truth, he’d made plenty for her to snack on.
“I know, Daddy.” She alternated cranberries with popcorn until the garland was a few feet long. Without asking for direction, she made a large knot in the free end and draped it over their small tree. “It’s so pretty!”
“We used to decorate our trees like this when I was a kid.” After adding his to the tree, he started another. “On New Year’s Day, we’d take the whole tree into the woods so the wildlife could have a holiday treat.”
“I like that much better than ornaments from a store.” Frowning, she added, “But I’d miss the lights.”
“Oh, we have lights.” He got up and plugged them in, enjoying her delighted laughter. “We just have to take them off before we put the tree outside.”
“And we can use them next year, right?”
“Exactly.” He grimaced and went into the kitchen, where he’d left his phone to charge while they rode. Returning, he held it up and added, “We were going to listen toA Christmas Carolwhile we decorate.”
He tapped his phone to start the audiobook, and just as quickly, lost Susan’s attention. She became so entranced that she completely forgot about the garlands they were making.
Eventually, he set his needle and thread aside, content to watch her experience the story for the first time. It was a first time for him too. Never had something so simple been so deeply satisfying. He even enjoyed the tiny bit of bratting when she ate more popcorn than was good for her.
“Oh, Tiny Tim…” She paused the story and tears glistened on her cheeks. “Walt, the story can’t end there! It’s not fair!”
“Maybe you’re getting overwrought,” he said, channeling his inner Peter Falk fromThe Princess Bride. “I think we should finish this after you have a good, long nap.”
“Don’t you dare stop it!” She scrambled for his phone and clutched it to her chest. “I want to listen to the end.”
“As you wish.” Smirking, he let her keep the phone, but didn’t stop watching her until the audiobook credits played.
She smiled and brushed at a few remaining tears. “That was… It was so good. Can we listen to it every year, Daddy?”
His heart missed a beat, then caught a steady rhythm again. Chances were good that she wouldn’t be around for future Christmases, but he wasn’t about to spoil her weekend by talking about the future they might not share.
“Anything you want, babygirl,” he finally murmured.
He knew exactly what he’d give her for Christmas.
Susan
Walt was quiet while they finished cleaning up their supper of toasted biscuits and leftover pot roast. Silence used to make her anxious, but it was comfortable with him.
It was like they were an old married couple who didn’t need words to communicate. She hid a smile, imagining them aged and sitting on the couch surrounded by grandchildren opening presents.
Definitely a bucket list wish.
When the last pan was dried and put away, he offered her his hand and led her up the stairs.
Without words, they undressed each other. Soft kisses chased softer caresses as he backed her toward the bed and laid her on the silky cotton sheets.
“You’re so fucking beautiful,” he whispered, breaking the silence.
His eyes never leaving hers, he cupped her face in his callused palms and kissed her as his thick cock teased her opening. She didn’t dare say a word and risk stopping his slow, drugging kisses, but she wanted to tell him how beautiful he was to her.
Desperate for more, she bent her knees, opening herself to him while he kissed a leisurely path down her neck to her collarbone. She shivered, loving the scratch of his beard against her skin. Every callus on his fingertips sparked another surge of need, until she whimpered and lifted her hips in a silent beg.
Her core dripped, and she didn’t know if she’d survive waiting another second for the delicious slide of his shaft inside her.
“What do you want, baby?” He pulled a nipple into his mouth and sucked, making her cry out. “Tell Daddy, Susan.”
“I— Oh, god, Walt, that feels good.”
