Page 60 of Asher

With those three words, I took in the man that was Asher.

The man who had never once lied to me.

The man that I trusted above all others.

And when I saw something akin to hunger in those hazel eyes of his with flecks of gold in them, I swallowed.

Heat. Passion. Need. Trust. And love.

Then, like a clumsy newborn giraffe, I climbed onto his lap.

My thighs were on the outsides of his, my hands wrapped around the back of his neck.

And then, he looked at me, his face coming closer to mine, and there, against my lips, he whispered, “Took you long enough.”

I felt my breath catch.

The moment I had been waiting for. For well over a decade, it was finally about to happen.

However, right before his lips could touch mine, the doors to the clubhouse opened.

And when I looked in that direction, as did everyone else, I noticed two things.

Asher’s body stiffened.

And Stella’s face went white. Pale white.

Then her eyes came to me, and I couldn’t read the look on her face.

But it was gone before I could even try, then her eyes glanced at Asher, and then she looked at the woman.

The woman, dressed in a pair of red wide-legged pants and a fluffy white blouse, said, “Hey, sweet pea,” and I saw she was looking at Stella.

Then her gaze moved, and when her eyes landed on me, she looked over slightly and then at Asher, and weirdly, with a small laugh, she said, “Hey, honey, I’m home.”

My head whipped around to look at Asher, and I asked, “Who is she?”

Asher didn’t respond to me. But I did see that familiar tick in his jaw.

The vein in his throat was throbbing.

But then... he turned his head and stared into my eyes, and I watched as the corners softened ever so slowly.

Then he lifted me up and off his lap ever so carefully sat me back down in the seat. His face was barely an inch away from mine, and he whispered, “Be patient with me. Okay?”

I didn’t respond.

I didn’t even move.

Because not even a second later, my gaze moved to the woman, and when she moved her hand and revealed a single gold band on a very important finger, my world felt as though it had tilted on its axis.

Asher moved away from me, tagged the woman around the waist, and pulled her to his office.

Stella moved with them.

Adan then... when I felt a ton of eyes on me, I took them in, and one thing I saw reflected in them... remorse.

Yeah, I definitely didn’t have a good feeling about that woman.
