“Well, then send more of your employees to watch over me. I can give them invitations. I am sure the rich, famous, and wealthy assholes of the east coast will have no idea who any of you are. And if they do then they sure as hell won’t fuck around.”
“She has a point,” Mark cuts in.
“And I just bought the most gorgeous dress,” I add although probably not the best reason for me to attend. “I have to go.”
Mark smirks next to me at my stupid reasoning. Jackson sighs. “Alright. I will look into things. See what I can organize. I just don’t think it’s a good idea.”
“Noted.”
“How is everything else? Mark has told me but I want to hear it from you.”
I shrug. “My husband still doesn’t seem to care about me so who knows why he filed a missing person report. He still won’t sign the divorce papers that my lawyer has sent over three times now. And I am pretty sure he is fucking his assistant. But you know c’est la vie. At least my kids are happy I am home. They leave for camp next week though. I feel better about that because they will be safe there. I know I will miss them.”
“Everything is secured for her to see her mom this weekend with the kids,” Mark adds in. “I will take them there and then Ben will bring them home.”
“Good. Well, let me work on the things for the gala. I will let you know the plans on Monday.”
“Got it boss,” Mark laughs.
Jackson shakes his head as he hangs up the phone.
“Do you think me going to the gala is a bad idea?” I ask Mark. I’ve learned he is a bit more flexible than Jackson.
“Yes. But I also know you need to go.” He scratches the back of his neck. “My wife was drugged at a gala. So maybe don’t drink anything.”
My eyes bug out at his words.
“Well, I am sure it won’t happen to you. What are the odds that I go to a gala where two women I know get drugged.”
“Maybe I shouldn’t go.”
“Nah, you need to be there. Plus, I know Jackson will put me to work on finding at least five of us to attend. You will be safe.”
I nod. I don’t want to let them know I am worried about the gala. I will be in the public eye, the easiest place for someone to attack me if they wanted to. It irks me that we still have no idea about the man that shot me or about the break in.
“Now, let’s go get those two rascals packed.”
Chapter Thirty-One
Landon
I miss her.
I’ve been itching to see her.
It’s been two weeks and I can still see those honey eyes as if they are right in front of me.
But every time I ask Jackson if I can go to Boston, he tells me no.
Too bad, I have the weekend off and I overheard that Mari is going to spend the weekend with her mom in Plymouth before the girls go to summer camp.
And I already booked my flight to Boston.
Now I just need to convince Mark to let me watch over her this weekend instead of Ben.
I call him on my way to the airport but he doesn’t answer.
It pisses me off that Jackson won’t let me be her security detail. He says it has nothing to do with our relationship and everything to do with the fact I work out of the west coast office. I know it’s a load of horse shit. I’m sure he wouldn’t mind if Mari wasn’t still technically married. I’m not going to lie. It would be hard to keep things strictly professional between us if I had to watch that luscious ass walk around and not be able to touch it.
