Jager skewered him with a look before softening his gaze onto me. “I can’t wait. And it’s not blowing money to make sure this is a night you’ll never forget.”
I rubbed my hands along my dress, nervous for the first time—since, well, our first time. We’d done it in my bedroom at home. My whole family was away and Jager had come over early in the day. I’d just come out of the shower, wearing only my robe. I guess it was just a little too much for both of us to handle. It was a bit awkward and quick. And thank God I didn’t get pregnant because we hadn’t used—
“Shit, Jager. We need to stop someplace to grab some…”
“Wine? Chocolates? What do you need? Whatever you want, I’ll order it for you.”
I smiled. “No. I don’t have any protection. Do you?”
I wasn’t sure if I was more disappointed when he shook his head ‘no’ or relieved that he hadn’t planned this all along. The slow-building attraction had felt genuine on my part, and now I was certain it was the same for him, too.
“Here’s your room key, sir,” the man handed Jager a small envelope. “If you need anything, don’t hesitate to call the number inside and a butler will get you whatever you need.” He said the last part in a low voice, making me wonder if he’d heard our conversation.
Jager, however, took the envelope without much talk except for a quick thank you.
As he escorted me to the bank of elevators off to the side, his hand brushed the small of my back and I smiled. It was a small gesture, but one I found incredibly sexy. As though he had the right to put his hand there because it was a spot that was not accessible to just anyone.
When the elevators closed and it was only the two of us inside, a sort of electrical current ran through the air. I felt nervous. I hadn’t been nervous our first time, but maybe because I’d known then he hadn’t been with anyone else before. He had nothing to compare it to. What if he’d slept with a hundred women since then? What if it was only one, and she was the best sex of his life, and I would fail miserably in comparison?
Jager pressed his thumb between my brows and smoothed out the skin there. “What are you worrying about?” he asked. “Have you changed your mind?”
I shook my head. “No. It’s not that. I guess I was just comparing it to our first time.”
He groaned but laughed at the same time. “God, don’t remind me of how terrible I was.”
“Oh no. No. You weren’t terrible.” I shrugged. “It was quite sweet and innocent. And I guess I’m worried I won’t…”
“You won’t?”
The elevator doors opened, but Jager pulled me back when I tried to step out. “Say the word, Bumblebee, and we go back downstairs, and I will be content to hold you in my arms while we dance.”
I pulled him out of the elevators with both hands. “Well, you may be content, but I won’t be,” I said with a smirk.
A little growl escaped his throat, and it sent shivers up my spine.
“Which is our room?” I asked as we walked down the hallway.
“This one right here.” He pulled out the key and unlocked the door.
The first thing I noticed was the view. It was incredible. I could see not only Manhattan, but Brooklyn and all the other boroughs from up here. There were so many lights from cars, stores, apartment buildings, and billboards that the inside of the apartment was visible without any lights on.
Jager walked over to me at the window and put his hands on my shoulders. Then, he kissed my temple and said, “I’ll be right back. Make yourself comfortable.”
His fingers lingered on my shoulder before he walked away. I felt the cold air brush against the back of my neck and the hair stood on end.
After he left, I looked around the room. It was larger than the bungalow I lived in with my brother. There was a full-size kitchen with stainless steel appliances that looked like they’d never been touched. The black granite reflected the lights outside, and I ran my hand across its cold surface.
Goosebumps rose on my arms, and I rubbed them until I was warm. Jager had grabbed my coat, but I didn’t want to put it on. It wouldn’t be comfortable.
My eyes caught a brilliant white marble through a pair of white doors, and I smiled.
I walked toward the bathroom and was immediately struck by the spa-like scent. It was eucalyptus and perhaps white tea.
I traced the large white tub with my fingers as I looked around the room. There was another door that connected to the bedroom, two vanities, a shower with two shower heads, and a steam room attached.
Damn, this was more opulent than anything I could have imagined.
Spotting the large white robe, I unzipped the back of my dress and let it pool to the ground. I would have taken a picture of the red draped across the white marble had I had my phone. There was something artistically beautiful about it.
