“We could,” said Byron.“Or…”
” ‘Or’ what?” Cade asked.
Byron said, “Or we could head back over to my place and use the basking room for a while.”He glanced at Jenna.“That is, if you’re interested.”
Jenna nodded a bit, turning the thought over in her head, considering.“The basking room.I like the basking room.”
“Yeah, the basking room,” said Cade, grinning crookedly.“What do you say, Elliot?Byron’s place? The basking room?”
Eyeing Jenna and seeing the approval in the tilt of her eyebrows, I said, “Definitely the basking room.Let’s go.”
And with that, our plans for our return to Tellus after a brief sojourn on Earth were all set.
CHAPTER 11
Jenna
When we arrived at the building where Byron lived, on the way up to his apartment, Cade told me about his plans for the future. For the time being, he was staying with Byron. But he had an interesting idea about what he might soon do with his life.
We’d just gotten inside Byron’s door when Cade told me what he wanted to do.I was surprised—and impressed.
”The World Bureau of Justice—really?”I was startled at the idea, but also pleased and fascinated.
Cade was happy to see that I didn’t dismiss it or write it off, that I actually approved.“That’s what I had in mind.I know it’s a total change of directions for a guy like me, after the things I used to do for my family and the trouble it got me into—you know, including the time in the cage. The Bureau doesn’t usually consider people with my record.”
”Well, they should think again,” I said.“Okay, you were convicted of theft; and you served time. But what you did also went towards saving me and stopping the Gorgonites, who were going to do awful things with that Ambience weapon.”I asked Byron, “Shouldn’t they take that into account?”
”They should, I agree,” Byron said thoughtfully.“And Cade was never actually charged with any of the other things he did for his family, so his record is clean of that.”
”See!” I said to Cade, encouragingly.“You served your time and the rest of your record is clear. There ought to be a chance.”
”Yeah,” he said.“Especially if some people with a good record and good standing, and the right connections, put in a good word for me.Like maybe somebody from a really respected family, and somebody who’s a star champion athlete with fans all over Tellus.”He looked from Byron to Elliot.
A bit teasingly, Elliot stroked his chin and said, “Well, somebody like that might be persuaded to toss a few good words in a guy’s direction, if he, you know, really, really wanted to change his life.”He smiled mischievously, glancing at Byron.“Do you know anyone who might want to speak up for a guy like that?”
Byron pursed his lips, rolled his eyes, and tossed his head a bit, continuing Elliot’s tease.“Well, you know, the guy would have to be really sincere about wanting a different kind of life than he’s had.You never can tell about some people’s sincerity sometimes, but…”
Cade made a funny, sour sort of look, twisting his lips and arching an eyebrow.“Guys, come on…!”
”Really, you two,” I said, “don’t tease.”
Elliot and Byron chuckled at how they’d made their friend squirm a bit.Elliot slapped Cade on the back.“Oh, like we wouldn’t put in a good word.Byron and I would love to see Cade make something good of his life for a change.”
”It’s all of us for one of us,” Byron agreed.
Approvingly, I said, “There now. There are my Three Musketeers.”
All three of them gave me a puzzled look with wrinkled brows.“Three what?” asked Cade for all of them.
I laughed at their reaction to my little reference, the right idea in the wrong world.“It’s another Earth thing,” I explained.
“We are going to have to get some more time in that world of yours,” Byron said.
“Some time we will,” I promised.
“It’s still morning,” said Byron.“Shall we adjourn to the basking room before lunch?”
”And after lunch,” Elliot said.
