”This world really is a different kind of place,” Byron said, nodding.

A few minutes later, the waitress brought us lunch, and a few minutes after that, she served the two guys from the Jeep.We talked about how Tellus had men, both human and Scaler, who felt the kind of attraction that the guys from the jeep had.The two of them were probably a couple and not interested in anyone but each other anyway.Neither Elliot nor Cade nor Byron had ever experimented with other males, though many men and women in both worlds were known to do that kind of exploring.My three guys all agreed that being with humans wasenough of an “exploration” for them and they were happy with it, as I was more than happy with them.

Then I drove us home, where Nana had a surprise waiting for us.

Out on our deck there was a hatch in the floor, under a rug.When the hatch was opened, out popped a fire pit, like a smaller version of the fire pit at the entrance of the History Museum in Pendrake City, Tellus.When we returned from our drive, we found that Nana had lit the fire pit, put a steel rack and some aluminum foil over it, and was roasting steaks for dinner.Other than sex, there were very few things as exciting to Scaler men as a big meal of roasted meat.

So, in the soft golden hours of the late afternoon and the purples and indigos of the early evening, we sat out on the deck with Nana, enjoying the beautiful meal she’d prepared for us and Nana grew more and more comfortable with Cade, Byron and Elliot, and I grew to appreciate better and better how quickly they had made themselves at home on Earth, with me.

We cleaned up after dinner and Nana once again excused herself to go up to bed.The guys stood up like gentlemen for her as I escorted my grandmother back inside.But before we left, she turned around and looked at them in an almost maternal sort of way, and said to them, “You know, I find I don’t much care what else you are.You’re very nice boys.”I watched the way the three of them reacted to that, the soft little smiles that they wore and the way they nodded their heads at her words.They were very much like young human males responding to kindness and affection.My heart melted a little to see it.

The place was called Precipice Point.It jutted out at the top of a cliff over Sunbeam Canyon, through which a babbling creek twisted like a silvery blue serpent—which was fitting, in a way, for the company that I brought up there the next day.What better sight for three men who were dragons to look out on than a sparkling serpent of water?They should feel even more at home.

The rim of the point had very thick and sturdy steel railings that ran in both directions from where we stood on the hiking trail.Elliot, Cade, Byron, and I had not hiked all the way up; we left Daddy’s car in a little parking area of dirt and pine cones just a short walk down the hillside.We stood together near the guard rails and looked out on Sunbeam Canyon and the face of the cliff opposite us; the trees at the forest’s edge surrounding the open area where we stood, while on the other side more trees marked the edge of another stretch of forest and beyond the other cliff face rose the peaks of mighty mountains cutting an edge of green and white across the California sky.

My plan for today hinged on one thing.There was a forest ranger that Daddy and Uncle Neal knew.Uncle Neal was close to him; they’d gone to school together.I asked him for a very special favor, which he did only because it was me asking.Once we started up the country road through the forested hillside leading to the Point, our ranger friend put up a roadblock behind us, closing off the road for any other traffic.It was selfish, I knew.It would deprive anyone else of enjoying Precipice Point for a few hours.But I couldn’t have anyone coming up onto the Point with us to see what I’d be enjoying during my visit.

”Well,” said Byron, “we can help you make some other memories up here now.”And he and Cade glanced meaningfully back at me.

Elliot, at my other side, gave me the same look, smiling quietly in a way as to tell me exactly what was on his mind.

“We’ll have something to eat first,” I said, looking behind me now to the place on the grass where we’d left the picnic baskets and blankets.“Come on.”

We sat together on the blankets and tore through everything that Nana and I had packed.I talked about Daddy’s interest in bringing the totally clean energy source of the Ambience to Earth to help protect natural places like this, which were so often threatened by human industry and how short-sighted humans can be.My frustrations and uncertainties about my father meant he was never far from my mind.The guys repeated their promise to help me find him when we got back to Tellus.I never imagined I’d ever be up here with anyone like them.My memories of times spent up here with Daddy and Uncle Neal began to move aside to make room for what would be the new, happy memory of a day spent with my three favorite people in the world—any world.

”Are we ready now?” Elliot asked.

Holding out a clawed hand on an arm with glistening scales, Elliot said, “Let’s fly.”I let him gather me into his powerful dragon arms and carry me to the guard rails, with Cade and Byron at his side.Their wings beat mightily at the air and made awesome whooshing noises, and I wrapped my arms around Elliot’s dragon neck.In a second, we rose from the grass,and in another second, we climbed swiftly into the air over the canyon.The wind blew against my face and through my hair, and my dragon guys let out screeching bellows, making me think of how the prehistoric Pterosaurs must have sounded when they took flight.Seconds later I found myself looking down at a view that I’d seen so many times, in a way I’d never seen it.The tops of the trees were now beneath me, and the winding snake of the creek was now directly below me.I was flying over Sunbeam Canyon.

It was like being on the rollercoaster at Knott’s Berry Farm, but without the rumble of the wheels along the tracks while the car zoomed up and down.This was a different kind of zoom—faster and higher and even more fun.Elliot had carried me in flight before, but never through skies that I had looked into from the ground as a girl.I was experiencing something I’d known all my life, but for the first time.I was an innocent when I used to look up at the space that I was flying through now.I had returned as a woman, growing wiser than I was, but still filled with wonder.Zooming through this sky in Elliot’s arms was like another loss of virginity, one that I welcomed with whoops and laughs that carried out into the wind over the treetops and sailed away as if I’d tossed it onto the shining waters of the Sunbeam Canyon Creek.

The three of them climbed high above the cliffs, and as Elliot’s wings beat hard to gain altitude, I felt perfectly safe with his scaly, muscular arms around me.I could never come to any harm with him.I could totally trust him.He sent the proud noise of his dragon bellow into the air as we rose towards the clouds and then, as fast as we’d flown up, we leveled off, and I found myself between the stretch of endless blue sky above me and a spreading carpet of green treetops below me.The creek was now a silver thread, twisting its way through the green expanse.Elliot and the guys caught a thermal pocket in the air,and they stopped beating their wings and just stretched them out wide, soaring along like gliders.We were wrapped in the most amazing, serene silence.It seemed so tranquil up here.Even the galloping beat of my heart slowed down.Gliding along, we all seemed like a part of the sky.We could have just hung there forever, or so it seemed.I gazed out and across the way and smiled at the sight of Byron and Cade, wings outstretched, tails extended, looking like two big, scaly, long-necked, leathery-winged kites, meandering through the sky with us.My three dragons were masters of the air.

After how long I didn’t know, I felt a new surge of power in Elliot’s muscles.His wings beat again, and he angled his neck back down towards the sea of treetops.The pounding of his wings and the thrashing of his tail took us below once again.The treetops became a rolling blur of green until Elliot got lower and I could once again see the tree line and the faces of the cliffs.His wing beats slowed us down and we went into another glide over the landscape of the tops of the cliffs until we swooped over where we’d left the blankets in the grass, and Elliot put us into a hover and a slow descent.Byron and Cade touched down near us.My heart had sped up again, but it slowed with Elliot setting me down on the blankets and the feeling of the ground under my feet.But I had a new rush of excitement when my three dragons morphed themselves quickly back to human and whipped off their thongs.Suddenly I was a clothed woman surrounded by three spectacularly naked guys.Now it was time for what Daddy and Uncle Neal’s ranger friend had helped us make sure no one else would see.
