“Just try and stay away from her, Scott. Please.”
“If that’s what Megan wants, then that’s what I’ll do. But I’m not sure it is, what she wants.”
She’s about to say something, but then she changes her mind, shakes her head, and turns to leave, and suddenly I’m up out of my seat, and I have no idea why. “Laney, hang on!”
She stops, spins slowly around, and fixes me with a look that could freeze water.
“Can we talk?”
“Why would I want to talk to you?”
“Because I’m tired of the tension. I think we all are.”
She opens her mouth, but once again decides against saying whatever it was she was about to say. Instead, her shoulders visibly sag, and she lowers herself down into the chair opposite mine. “What do you want, Scott?”
“I love your sister, Laney. I never stopped loving her…”
“You did.”
Her eyes lock on mine, her stare hard and cold.
“You cheated, and you don’t do that if you love someone. And I don’t have time for this now, I’m meeting someone.”
“Megan?”
She pushes her chair back and stands up. “Try and let her get on with her life, okay? And you get on with yours.”
She walks away, and I sigh. That was a waste of time, but the fight isn’t over yet. Not by a long shot.
Megan
“You had lunch with Scott?”
Laney sits down, and I stare at her. “Good to see you, too.”
“I’ve just spoken to him.”
“Who?”
“Scott. He’s over there.”
“Is he?” I cast a quick glance in the direction of Laney’s head jerk. “Is he alone?”
“Does it matter?”
I don’t know. I think it might, actually.
“He said you had lunch yesterday.”
“We did.”
“Did he force you?”
I frown. “I’m sorry?”
“Did he force you to have lunch with him?”
“No, of course he didn’t! Jesus, Laney, can we stop with the ridiculous accusations, please?”
