“You can’t get rid of me, Madelyn. The earlier you accept it, the better,” I state, leaning forward. “Now tell me, did you have breakfast this morning?”

She blinks at the subject change. “Why do you care?”

“Answer the question.”

“I had some coffee,” she grits out. “Thanks to a certain somebody, I didn’t get to any donuts.”

“So basically, you haven’t eaten today,” I say on a frown. The woman has no sense of self-preservation. “Get up,” I order.

She scoffs. “You’re not the boss of me, Dominic.”

“You have two choices. Either you stand up and follow me out like a good girl or I carry you out of here kicking and screaming. And since it’s my first day, I really don’t need that sort of attention. So choose carefully.”

She opens her mouth to speak but is distracted when someone knocks on her open door. I turn to look at the interruption and find Kenneth standing in the doorway.

“Hey,” he says slowly, looking between us.

“Hey, Kenny,” Madelyn returns with a fake-ass smile.

“A couple of us are going to the new sushi spot that just opened a couple blocks away for lunch. I was going to see if you wanted to come.”

The muscles in my jaw twitch and it takes everything in me not to glare at him. Madelyn practically jumps to her feet, grabbing her jacket from the coat hanger beside her desk.

“Actually, Kenny, I’d love to come,” she says excitedly. Then she shoots me a smug look. “I choose option three.”

I watch as she sidles up next to the blond guy who is really starting to get on my nerves. He’s still staring at us curiously.

He looks at me. “Hey, man. You could come with us if you want to,” he offers insincerely.

“He doesn’t want to,” Madelyn answers for me. “Let’s go, Kenny.”

She practically pushes him out of the office and a second later, they’re both gone. I lean back in the chair, displeasure coiling through me. I’m going to make sure she pays for that.

Having nothing better to do, I head to Joshua’s office. He’s on a call when I open the door. He frowns but continues speaking to the person on the other end. I ignore him in favor of lying down on the couch in his office.

I’d like a couch in my office, as well. Although it is pretty small. Would a couch even fit?

“Would you please knock?” Josh asks in exasperation once he hangs up the phone.

I don’t reply, shifting on the couch and getting comfortable. I could fall asleep like this.

“What do you want, Dom?”

“Silence.”

He sighs. “I was going to order something for lunch. You want anything?”

I shoot him a thumbs up over my head. Twenty minutes later, we’re seated and eating some pasta and meatballs.

“So, why so grumpy?” Joshua questions, pointing his fork at me.

I shrug.

“If you’re going to barge into my office, the least you could do is talk to me, Dom,” he prods.

He’s got a point there. Plus, I might as well use him to gather information.

“What do you know about Kenneth?” I ask.
