I sit up, reaching a hand up to smooth my hair, stunned at his abrupt departure.
“I’m sorry, I just can’t,” he mutters.
“You’re a coward!” I say, anger bubbling up inside me. I know I’m being an unreasonable child about all of this, but I want what I want.
Him.
“Truer words never spoken,” he says, scoffing. “I have to think about my job. Aiden. Everything…”
“Yeah, right. I get it,” I reply, rising to my feet and heading to the bathroom. “I’ll be gone soon.”
“Right,” he mutters to my back.
I close the door with a heavy slam.
I guess I don’t take rejection well.
My body, reeling from his touch, his kiss, hasn’t caught on to the fact that the party is over. My pussy is soaked, my limbs trembling. It’s not fair.
None of this shit is fair.
And I have no idea what to do about any of it.
ChapterFourteen
Carter
I closemy briefcase with a heavy sigh, thankful my classes for the day are over. The days when Eve’s class aren’t in session are the easiest. I was grateful today was such a day, because I have no idea how I’d make it through the class with her looking at me with those eyes of hers.
Instead of having to struggle through that, her absence gives me the opportunity to lose myself in my work. It serves as a much needed distraction and break from the chaos circling in my head.
Now that I no longer have that distraction, I need to lose myself in a stiff drink. I lock up my room and head to the closest bar. I know it will be full of students and faculty, but I hope I can find a quiet corner alone.
Unfortunately, I’m not the only one in the market for a drink because the place is packed. I grab a beer and a shot of whiskey and go in search of a place to sit.
“Carter! Over here!”
I turn at the sound of my name.
Jeff, a fellow teacher in the biology department is waving me down. He’s sitting at a table full of other faculty members that I only slightly recognize. He gestures to the empty seat next to him and I head over, grateful for a place to sit, even if I’m forced to socialize.
Maybe it will be good for me, I think, as I sit down and smile as Jeff introduces me to everyone. There’s Jane, a chemistry professor. And Hannah, from the mathematics department. And across the table from me are Sarah and Alex, who seem to be a couple and are also professors, but in different departments.
“How are your classes going?” Jeff asks.
The others wait for my answer and I feel like I’m being put on the spot.
“They’re going fine, I’m settling in nicely considering I didn’t have much of a warning.”
“Yeah, that whole thing happened fast, didn’t it?” Sarah asks.
“Well, what did he expect?” Alex quips, with a smirk.
“Who’s he?” I ask.
“The professor before you. He was fired. Abruptly, too.”
“Oh, right,” I nod.
