The fire flickered out of Gabi’s eyes and her shoulders softened as she wrapped her arm around Ava’s waist.

“I know you did,” Gabi said.

“And I know you guys never really got along, but I needed you, Gabi.” Then Ava turned to look at him. “And you. I need both of you.”

Max had both of them in his arms without a second thought, and he tried to ignore the feel of Gabi tucked against his chest as he hugged her and his sister.

Focus.

“Please don’t cry, Av. You know I suck at dealing with tears,” he said.

“I didn’t want to find a stranger, and Gabi is an awesome nanny, and the kids already love her,” Ava said against his chest.

He smoothed his hand down her back. “I know. It’s fine.”

“Yes. We’ll figure everything out,” Gabi said, her voice muffled between them.

He should release her. Them.

But he kept his arms right where they were.

His sister needed comforting, and Gabi was already there.

Then Elise started crying.

“No more fighting, you two,” Ava said, stepping back from Max.

“Of course not. We can get along,” Gabi said, glaring as he let them both go.

He was tempted to wiggle his brow at her to see if her cheeks would flush again, but he resisted.

“You stay here. I’ll go check on Elise,” Gabi said.

“Gab,” Ava started.

“No. Stay here. It’s fine,” she said.

“What about your snack?” he asked.

“You eat it. Good night, Max.” She spun around and headed toward the stairs.

He would not look at her ass.

Maybe just a peek.

“Max, I know I should’ve told you,” Ava said, drawing his attention away from Gabi’s retreating form.

“It’s fine. I don’t mind having her here, and whatever you need, I’ll give you, Av. You know that.”

“You’re my favorite big brother,” she said, giving him a side hug.

“I’m your only brother.”

“And as my favorite and only brother, could you please play nice with her? No pranks,” she warned him.

“Where’s the fun in that?” he said.

She groaned. “Please, Max.”
