“Gabi,” Ava said, startled when Gabi walked into the kitchen.

“Didn’t mean to scare you. I was up reading and heard her crying. Want me to take her for a bit?”

“Um, no, go back to bed. I’m just getting some water and then we’re going to go snuggle until she falls asleep. Sorry if we woke you.”

“You didn’t. I couldn’t put my book down.”

Ava smiled. “I get it. Go back to bed. You look a bit wound up. Was it a romance novel?”

“Of course. You know that’s the only thing I read,” Gabi said, grateful that her most likely flushed face was easy to explain.

She glanced back into the living room on her way to the stairs, but Max was nowhere to be seen.

As she slid under the covers, her phone buzzed.

Max: I’m better than any romance novel.

Gabi: You wish.

Max: Challenge accepted.

She flopped back onto the pillow, shoving her phone face down on the nightstand.
