“I love my job. I know you don’t understand that, but I’m happy with the work that I do.”
“Gabi, you’re basically getting paid to hang out with your best friend and now you’re dating your boss.”
She itched to tell her mother to fuck off but bit her tongue. “Mom. This is my life. I’m happy with Max, and with my job and any job in the future. I’m asking for you to try to understand that.”
“Think about the consequences if things go wrong. What are you willing to lose to let this play out?”
Gabi bit back her anger. “I know what I’m doing. I have to go.”
“I’m sorry this isn’t what you want to hear, but I do love you, Gabi. I just expected better from you.”
Gabi ended the call before she could say anything else.
“How did it go?” Ava asked when Gabi walked back into the kitchen. Max and the twins were playing in the living room.
He looked up and gave her the biggest smile. She gave him a small one in return.
“As well as you would expect,” Gabi said, slightly dejected.
“Well, it doesn’t matter. Bunnies. Your mom. Stupid social media. I couldn’t be happier, and that’s truly all that matters, right?” Ava grinned.
Gabi laughed weakly. “Always about you.”
“Of course. I’m your best friend, remember? That’s never going to change. I promise.”
That’s exactly what Gabi needed to hear. She gave her bestie a hug and spotted Max looking at them, concern in his eyes.
She gave him a big smile. They were going to work this out because in the end, love was all that mattered, right?
