Maybe her dad had come home early. She was in no mood to talk to him right now.
“Go away, Dad,” she said to the closed door, but he knocked again.
Taking in a deep breath and wiping away her tears, she wrenched it open.
“What?”
“I couldn’t go,”Desmond said.
“What?” she said, her eyes filled with tears, and he hated himself for doing that to her.
“I took two steps away from your door and realized that I would be an absolute idiot to walk away from you.”
“I can’t do this, Desmond. The back and forth. I can’t play games with you.” There was a hitch in her voice that twisted his gut.
He nudged her back into the house and followed her in, shutting the door behind him.
“I was trying to do the right thing for everyone, but that would make both of us—or at least me—miserable. I don’t need a pause. I need you. I will always need you.”
“Really?” she said.
He hated that he’d given her a moment of doubt. He tugged her into his body, needing to have his arms around her.
“It’s not going to be easy, mainly for you. The guys will tease me, but that’s it. You’re putting your job and your reputation at risk for me. It’s hard for me to ask you to do that.”
“Do you love me?” she asked.
“Without question. Fuck. I hate that I made you question that. But yes, I’m in love with you. More than I thought possible. I can’t deny it. Hell, I don’t want to deny it,” he said.
“Then we’ll figure it out. I enjoy my job, but I can find another one if I need to. I don’t want to give up what we could have because of it. Yes, there will be gossip, but I don’t care. This can’t be the first time a player has hooked up with someone in the front office. I’m willing to take the chance if you are.”
He cupped her face in his hands and lowered his head. “I meant what I said. I’m in love with you. You worked your way into my heart and I’m not walking away. I had a brief moment of stupidity, and I’m not saying I’m perfect, but I’m staying put until you kick me out.”
She grinned, her entire face lighting up. “I love you, Desmond. This might be crazy, but there’s no one else I’d rather be crazy with.”
He chuckled. “Can I kiss you now?”
“What took you so long to ask?” she taunted, and he lowered his head, sealing his lips to hers.
He swallowed her soft moan, dropping one hand to her waist to hold her close.
“I need you, Desmond,” she whispered against his lips, and his cock hardened with equally matched desire.
He lifted her up, her legs instantly wrapping around his waist, and power-walked into her bedroom. She giggled when he tossed her on the bed, and then gasped when he followed her down and planted his lips on hers. Everything he had, he poured into the kiss, growling against her lips when she tugged on his hair.
He eventually broke the kiss and they shed their clothes in a frenzy. He’d wanted to go slow this time, and show her how much she meant to him, but he needed her too much. He had to show her this was what he wanted. What he would always want.
“Oh yes, Desmond,” she moaned when he sank inside her, settling to the hilt. She squeezed around him and his entire body shuddered.
To think that he’d even given it a moment’s thought to walk away from her.
Never again.
He lowered his head, kissing her again as he plunged in and out of her body.
“I love you,” he whispered against her lips between kisses, and her fingers tightened in his hair as her body clenched around his.
“I love you too,” she said, and then arched her back and they fell over in bliss together.
