Dinner continued much along the same line. Her family—mainly her mother—asked him questions, and in between quick kisses and lingering touches, Jake answered them and played the doting boyfriend.
To perfection if you asked him.
Darcy playfully told him to cool it with the PDA, but he was committed to the part. He’d teased her about being embarrassed by his affection, and her mother had said how cute they were again, causing Lydia to polish off the rest of her wine.
“Don’t stop on our account,” her mother had said, which only caused Darcy to blush harder. And for parts of him to get harder as well. She had him on edge, and he was at the point where he’d take any excuse to touch her.
Maybe they could renegotiate their deal. Add a few more perks.

Two hours later, they were heading up the stairs to her apartment, and lust was churning through his body. Every whispered touch of her hands on him, the soft trail of her finger over the back of his hand, or the way she leaned into him as they finished dessert, hadn’t helped at all. He wanted her and was having a difficult time trying to figure out if she felt the same way or was just playing along like they’d planned.
Her hand was currently tucked into his arm as he guided them down the hallway, not ready for the night to end.
“Thanks for doing this tonight. I put it off for so long that I didn’t think I could keep them from showing up at the arena to meet you one night,” she said, and laughed.
Maybe she wasn’t as twisted up as he was.
“That’s what I’m here for. We don’t have to avoid them. I think we did a really great job tonight convincing them.”
“Yes, we did. They bought it hook, line, and sinker,” she said, clearly pleased with herself.
“What’s next on our schedule? Anyone else we need to convince?”
“I don’t think so.” She fished around in her purse when they reached the front door and pulled out her keys. “Well, tonight was great,” she said.
“Yes. It was.”
She slipped her hand from his arm. “I should probably go in,” she said.
“Want to get a drink?” he asked.
“What?”
“Sorry. But it’s kind of early and…”
“Or you could come in for a drink?”
He tried to read her expression but couldn’t get past her teeth nibbling on her lower lip. It sent a bolt of lust straight to his cock.
“Is Ally here?” he asked.
“I don’t think so. She’s on another date tonight.”
“Great. I mean, it would’ve been nice to say hello to Little Harty.”
“You know she hates that nickname.”
“I know. And I don’t want to talk about her,” he said.
“Me either.” She pushed open the door and led him into her apartment. “What can I get you?”
“I’m fine with anything,” he said, but he really wanted her to stop fidgeting around the kitchen so he could find out if they were on the same page.
But how the hell was he going to do that aside from saying So about our deal. How about we add fucking?
Yeah, definitely not a smooth move.
