“Let my husband go! You didn’t even want your son. We can give him a better life than you can,” his wife says to me.
Before I can answer her, I feel a hand on my shoulder.
“Figlio, don’t do this. We will find out what happened. You need to keep a cool head right now. Don’t let them win,” my papa says in my ear.
“They were trying to buy my son, Papa. If Salvatore hadn’t found them, they would’ve taken him and I’d never see him again. MY SON!”
I can see the fear in this guy’s eyes, but I don’t give a fuck. I want him to fear me.
“I know, but you’re better than them. Don’t let Davis see this,” Papa says to me.
I let go of the guy’s shirt and he drops to the ground. His wife is still screaming at me that I’m the deadbeat father. Loraine is smirking at us from where she’s standing, and Leighton walks over to her.
“Why would you do this? Why would you take an innocent child from the only home he’s known and sell him? You don’t even care about him.” Leighton frowns at her.
“Why should you have him? Kayla is dead and you think you can just step in and take over as his parent? No. You’re not his blood. I am. So I found a couple who can take care of him and raise him right.”
“You’re crazy. And I hope you rot in jail for what you did tonight.”
Loraine laughs. “I’m not going to jail, you are. You have no claim to Kayla’s child. That bastard is mine and I’ll sell him if I want.”
“You’ll never touch a hair on his head. I don’t care what I have to do.”
I go to stand behind Leighton and watch Loraine’s eyes get wide.
“You see all these people in this room? They’re all family. Davis’ family, and each and every one of them would do anything to keep that little boy safe. Safe from predators like you. So go ahead and try to take him from us again. You’ll live to regret it,” I say to her.
“Are you threatening me?” she smirks. “I have witnesses that will back me up.”
I laugh. “That’s not a threat, Loraine. That’s a promise.”
“You won’t win. I’ve already won. I have a court order that states that kid is mine.” Loraine laughs.
Leighton and I look at Lorenzo.
“I’m sorry to say this, Ma’am. But your paper doesn’t mean anything. Kayla’s will states what she wanted if she passed. And her wishes supersede any court paper you have. Valentino is the biological father, the courts will give him custody. Especially because you’ve never spent any time with the child.”
Loraine laughs. “What are you? A lawyer? I have papers signed by a judge saying I have custody of that boy.”
“Iama lawyer. And again, your papers don’t hold any value here.”
“Put all of them in the cell. They can cozy up together for the night. St. Cloud is sending some of their officers to get them tomorrow,” Sal tells his deputies.
“You all should go home. Tomorrow they’ll go back to St. Cloud and go on trial for kidnapping, and trying to sell Davis. The couple knew they were buying a baby. So they’ll go on trial too. And Davis will never be taken from either of you again,” Sal explains to us.
Leighton hugs Sal. “Thank you so much.”
“Take your family home. We’ll talk more later,” he says to me.
I hug everyone and thank them for coming to be with us. Time to take my family home.
Epilogue
Leighton
Loraine and the three cops that helped her all got ten years in prison for what they did. Ten years doesn’t feel long enough for what they did. But that’s what they got. Not only did Loraine have the help of her brother, she had the help of a judge who she was having an affair with. He’s now lost his job and will be serving five years in federal prison. I worry about when they’re out—will they come back and try to take Davis again? I wish I could say no. But I can’t. Valentino says we can’t live our lives worrying about what could happen. And while I agree with him, it’s hard to not think about it.
Christmas is my favorite time of the year. Not just because of all the snow and lights, but everyone is happy during Christmas. Growing up, it was the one time of the year that my parents left us alone. So my memories at this time were always happy.
