Chapter One

Valentino

I grew up in foster care, never knowing my real family. I’ve always wondered why I was given up as a baby, maybe my parents were too young? Why not have me adopted? Was I taken away from my biological parents? So many unanswered questions.

I was lucky to find what I call my ‘chosen family’ when I was fourteen. The Bastianini family and the Cimaruta MC. I got caught graffitiing a building which belonged to Giacomo ‘Forza’ Bastianini. He’s the president of the Cimaruta MC. My punishment was that I had to scrub and repaint the wall. It took me a month to do it. Giacomo came to see me the first day I started cleaning the wall and he continued to come see me every day. We talked a lot and for the first time, I felt like I was being heard. Like someone actually cared about what I wanted and how I felt. The third week of my cleanup, Giacomo brought his wife, Caitríona, to meet me. She made me feel accepted, and when she hugged me, it made me feel important. The fourth week, they brought their children. They have two sets of twins—Celestino and Francesco were thirteen at the time, and Isabella and Luciana were twelve.

After that month, Giacomo and Caitríona asked me if I’d like to live with them. They had done everything they needed to do to become foster parents. They did that for me. I spent the next four years living with them and I finally knew what it was like to be part of a family. The anger I had felt while growing up started to disappear. Then at eighteen, Giacomo made me a patched member of the club. He said in the last four years I had proved my devotion to the family and to the club. I’d finally found my family.

The founders of our club are Fausto Bastianini and Liam Kearney. Fausto came from Italy and Liam from Ireland. They said they came to America with their families to give their children a better life. I’m glad they did because I’ve had the best life thanks to them. When I was patched in, Liam gave me my road name, like he gives all the members. Ombra.Shadow. He said that I was someone who lived in the shadows when they met me. Away from everyone and everything. Now, being in the shadows means I stay on the sidelines, to watch and protect my family.

When I was eighteen, Isabella and Luciana turned sixteen. And in our family that means they get a bodyguard. Giacomo asked me if I would be Isabella’s. Of course I said yes, even though she’s a pain in my ass. They’re my little sisters, how could they not be a pain? I was honored that Giacomo would trust me to protect one of them. Luciana’s bodyguard is Liam ‘Amante’Murphy. He grew up with the Bastianinis, his dad was a patched member. So Liam grew up in the MC life and last year when Luciana was taken, he almost lost his life protecting her.

I was there when she was taken. The Feral Raptors were a club that had just been patched over into our club when their President, Richard ’T-Rex’ Vaughan, decided to take Luciana. We got her back because Giacomo had everyone in the family and the council get trackers implanted in our arms. Because of that, we found Luciana within a day. I got knocked out from the impact of them hitting our SUV with their own vehicle. When I woke up, Isabella was curled up in the backseat and Luciana was gone. Amante had been knocked out from the impact too. Even though I’m not Luciana’s bodyguard, I felt like it was my fault she was taken. Between Amante and I, the girls should’ve been safe.

I was worried that Giacomo wouldn’t trust me with Isabella anymore. But we sat down a few weeks later and he told me that there was nothing I could’ve done to change what happened. We were doing exactly what we were supposed to. We were on our way to get the girls back to the compound because we had just gotten notice that T-Rex was in Chicago. We just didn’t find out in time.

Things could’ve turned out so much worse, but we were lucky. And now Luciana is married to Rónán and they have a son, Grayson. I have a feeling Isabella is going to be following her lead soon. She’s been with Fintan, Rónán’s older brother, for over a year now and he’s talked to me about wanting to marry her. I told him that he needs to talk to Giacomo first. But he’s afraid of him and I get that. Giacomo is very protective of his daughters and even if he likes Fintan, he may not give his permission. Only time will tell.

Christmas had always been my favorite time of the year. For whatever reason, it’s the one time of the year when people seem to be really happy. And families come together to celebrate each other. At least that’s what the Bastianinis did.

In high school, girls were never really important to me. I was focused on the club and my family. I dated a little, but nothing was ever serious. Luciana says that there’s someone out there for all of us. I think she’s full of it. In fact, I know she is.

Losing my best friend has been the worst thing to ever happen to me. Kayla and I met when we were five. It was the first day of kindergarten and we just gravitated to each other. From that day on, we were inseparable. Our moms even became good friends because of us.

A year and a half ago, Kayla had gone on a business trip. When she came back, she was acting a little weird. It took her a month to tell me she met a guy while on that trip. She said he was really sexy, six foot three and covered in tattoos. She said he told her his name was Ombra. I told her that was an odd name. She shrugged and said it was only one night. And even though they had a good time, she wasn’t planning to see him again, so now I could get to know him. I told her she was crazy. There’s the girl code to consider, but she said that doesn’t apply if she says to go for it. I remember laughing. Then three weeks later? Shewasn’t feeling well and I jokingly said maybe she was pregnant. Turns out she was. Davis was born seven months later. Surprise!

I kept telling Kayla that we should look for her ‘Ombra.’ She told me that she did call him while she was pregnant and he told her he wanted nothing to do with her or the baby. What a fucking asshole. To not even offer to help her? Well, fuck him. I told her I would help her in any way. It was always the two of us and after she told her parents, they kicked her out because she refused to have an abortion or consider adoption. They told her there was no way she could do it herself and they weren’t going to help her. So Kayla and I got an apartment together. Fuck her parents. I never thought that they would treat her like that.

Then, a month ago Kayla was driving home from work and was hit by a drunk driver. When I got to the hospital, the doctor told me that she was in and out of consciousness and that they were doing everything they could for her. I asked if I could see her—I was so worried that I would lose her and never be able to talk to her again. The nurse took Davis from me and then I was allowed to see Kayla. She made me promise to take care of Davis if anything happened to her. Of course I promised her, I would never leave Davis. Kayla died a few hours later from internal injuries. Most days I still can’t believe she’s gone.

Today I’m meeting with our attorney, Carl. Kayla left a will that I had no idea about and to be honest? I’m a little worried. Why would she have a will that I didn’t know about?

I stand up as I get called into Carl’s office. My hands are trembling as I shake his hand and sit down.

“Don’t look so nervous.” Carl chuckles.

I laugh. “Iamnervous. I’m worried about why Kayla had this will and didn’t tell me.”

“It’s nothing to worry about. She had me draw it up because of Davis. She didn’t want her parents to try to take him from you. And she has a request. But first I’m supposed to give you thesetwo letters. This one you’re to read now. And the other one is for later on.”

I take a deep breath and take the envelope from him.

“I’ll give you time to read it. I’m going to grab some coffee, did you want a cup?”

“No thank you, but maybe a bottle of water?” I ask.

“Of course. I’ll be back.” He nods.

I hear the door close and I look at the envelope.

“I miss you, Kayla,” I whisper as I open it.

Leighton,

From the moment we met, I knew we’d be besties till the day I died. I love you with all my heart and I appreciate you for everything you’ve done to help me and Davis. Especially after my parents disowned me. I made sure that the papers are in order for you to be able to take care of Davis. I don’t want my parents anywhere near him. Ever. I know I don’t have to tell you that. But I still said it. Carl has everything ready for you to sign. You’re Davis’ mama now.
