Okay, loud noises were a no.

“My wife has him,” Sage said. “Stetson’s old lady is also there with the rest of the kids. I have my van, though, and I can run by and go get him so that he can be with y’all. We know how y’all spoil him.”

I rolled my eyes. “He is not spoiled.

“Never spending a day without y’all in the first two years of his life is definitely spoiled,” Silas murmured. “Remember when we tried to watch him when he was eighteen months, and he screamed bloody murder for the first two hours before we gave up and called y’all back from your date?”

I shrugged. “Can’t say that I blame him for wanting his mama. I want her, too.”

Stetson lightly clapped me on the back and said, “We’ll get him here. We’ll bring some dinner, too. Sage’s ol’ lady has been cooking up a storm with mine to make sure y’all have a full freezer when you get out of this hospital.”

“Which’ll be in about three hours, folks.” A nurse came out of Mary’s room. “Mom’s cleaned up and ready for her boy back.”

“We’ll drop your van off, too, and take your bike home.” Bomber gave me a salute, and they all left, allowing me to go back into the room with my wife.

She held her hands out for John, and I placed him in her arms.

He immediately started rooting around, and I sighed. “Just one more kid to steal those away from me.”

Mary shot me a bored look. “Dixie, since when do you ever care if they’re occupied? If you want them, you have them.”

That was true.

I dropped down to one knee beside the bed and placed a kiss on her cheek before pulling back and looking at the miracle she’d made.

“I can’t believe you made me leave, and I missed this,” I grumbled. “Never again, Mary. Never again.”

She squeezed my hand. “I promise not to send you away again in at least the last month of my pregnancy.”

“How about a picture?”

I looked up to find the nurse with a Polaroid camera in her hand, waving it at us.

I leaned into my wife and pressed a kiss to her cheek.

“I love it when the alpha males get all gooey-eyed over their babies,” the nurse said just before she took the photo.

She handed it over to us, and together we watched it develop before Mary said, “This one is definitely going on the Christmas tree.”

“At least you gave us a little cushion before Christmas arrived,” I teased.

Mary snickered. “Two days? I guess you’re right. At least we won’t be expected to host a big event like we usually are.”

I patted her head. “It’s hilarious that you think my crazy family would expect anything less.”

She narrowed her eyes. “Dixie Normus, I don’t care how good your penis is. I’ll lop it right off if you don’t cancel.”

I scrunched up my nose at her. “Yes, ma’am.”

And when we got home a couple of hours later, I did indeed cancel Christmas dinner at our house with my family.

Instead, we spent it eating a lasagna that Stetson had cooked and dropped off himself, and enjoyed it as a family of four.
