Page 5 of Forgiving Fate

Allie was sitting there, her light brown hair flowing in the wind. She looked so small at that moment. Like, one giant gust would send her flying off into the wind.

Words failed me again and I could sense Allie didn’t want to speak, so we wordlessly got in the car.

I chalk it up to Logan briefing her on the plan and explaining in great detail what I looked like, so she didn’t just get in the car with some random that drove by.

I steal another glance at Allie before turning the car onto the highway. We are making better time than I thought. I always have a plan and twenty back-ups to follow that. Because these situations are unpredictable. Anything can happen and if I do not have an alternative, that could get someone hurt or killed.

I’ve seen it happen enough times to not take chances.

My phone rings through the silent car, scaring the shit out of me, and making me jump.

“Fuck,” I mutter.

Immediately, I look over at Allie and see that she is completely unphased.

Anger boils inside of me at the thought of her being so numb and I want to kill—.

“If you don’t answer her, she’s going to freak out.” Allie’s soft, but void of emotion voice interrupts my thoughts.

I glance at the screen again and see Logan’s name and hit the answer button on the steering wheel.

“Hello.”

“Hey Lan. You guys okay?” Grayson’s voice cuts through the speaker.

“Well, hello to you too, Logan,” I say dryly. The words leave my mouth before I can stop them. I keep my eyes on the road and avoid glancing at Allie.

Great, now she thinks you’re some asshole. Nice going stupid.

Before Gray can reply, I quickly say, “Yes. We are fine. We are on our way to the airport now. No issues.”

I hear Logan mutter something in the background and then it turns muffled.

Grayson clears his throat. “Sorry man. I took Logan’s phone so she would stop blowing up Allie.”

Allie glances over at me, shrugs, then turns back to look out the window. I can tell the last thing she wants to do is talk. I can’t even imagine the thoughts she’s having towards the situation or about Logan.

“Alright. Well, we are fine. I will text you when we get to the airport. We should be there in about two hours. I’ll update you if anything changes before then.” I take a breath, glance atAllie, then back to the road before continuing. “Lo. I made you a promise. And you know I don’t break my promises.”

I see Allie’s head turn toward me out of the corner of my eye and keep my eyes on the road.

I hear a sniffle come through the speaker. “Thanks Lan. Allie, if you’re listening, I love you and will see you soon.”

Silence fills the car. I wait to see if Allie will respond and when she doesn’t I say, “She’s sleeping, Lo. Love you both. Grayson, be sure to keep me updated if Carter finds anything on the Coleman case.”

Grayson agrees, and I hang up.

Carter and I graduated from the police academy together. Then we both joined Cliff Haven PD. He left a year before I did to take a job as a detective in the city. He was one of the first people I brought in when we started the missions and he has been vital when it comes to filtering people in our direction when cases come across his desk.

More silence fills the car and just as I am about to turn the music on low, Allie says, “Why did you do that?”

Without meeting her gaze that is fixed on the side of my head, I say, “Because you said nothing when she spoke up. And I can only assume she's blowing up your phone, which is why she called me? And why my brother took her phone away? If you wanted to talk to her, you would.”

I glance over at her when she doesn’t immediately respond and kick myself for being so blunt.

I’m really not meant to be in this role.

“But why did you lie and say I was asleep?”
