“I got it. I was just about to text you back, but I got distracted.”
“It's alright. I don’t know when I’ll be back, but you still have tomorrow off right?”
“Yup.”
“I’ll see you tomorrow if we don’t get back tonight.”
“Sounds good.” I try to keep the disappointment out of my voice, but I know I failed when I hear him mutter a curse under his breath.
“I miss you, Angel. I can’t wait to see you tomorrow.” He sounds just as disappointed as I do, and it breaks my heart.
It may be unhealthy, but we are already so attached to each other. Going a single day apart is like I’m missing a piece of myself. I know I shouldn’t be this way with the threat lingering over my head, but I couldn’t stop myself from falling for Grayson if I tried.
I have the urge to utter three words that I haven’t said to anyone other than my friends and Allie’s parents since my mom died.
“I miss you, too, Bear. Be safe tonight.”
I hear one of his brothers say something in the background and Grayson snaps back. I can’t catch what he says but when he comes back on the line, I can tell he’s annoyed.
“Always. Call you later.” As the line goes dead, Harper calls me over our radios saying we have a five car pile-up coming in fast.
My brain quickly snaps out of mopey girlfriend mode and the rest of the night flies by in a blur.
“So, when do I get to meet this man that has you hiding in the nurses' lounge checking your phone when we are slow?” Harper asks as we walk out to our cars.
“Soon, H. I haven’t even met his family yet. Well, I have but it was only one of his brothers.”
“He introduced you to his brother,” she muses softly. “Which means you need to introduce him to your sister.”
I loop my arm through hers as we walk. “I'll talk to him. We’ve barely had time for ourselves with how much I have been working.”
“I’m giving you a pass for now, but I better hear from you this weekend about plans or I’m showing up.”
“I promise, H. I will talk to him about it tomorrow when I see him.”
“He better–” Harper is cut off when my phone starts ringing like crazy.
I put a finger up to have her wait when I see Noah’s name on my phone and panic rises in my chest. He wouldn’t be calling me this late unless something was wrong.
I answer the phone, not hiding the panic in my voice. “Noah, what’s wrong?”
“Logan, you need to come to The Hideout right now,” Noah says, sounding completely freaked out.
“Noah, I don’t remember how to get there. I’ve only been that one time with Gray. What’s going on?”
Harper moves in front of me and silently asks what’s wrong. I shrug my shoulders, just as clueless as she is.
“We were on a–” Noah is cut off by a deep voice yelling his name.
“Don’t fucking tell her anything that isn’t necessary. Just tell her to get her ass here fast,” the deep voice yells.
“Logan. We were helping someone, and they got really hurt. We were going to take them to the hospital but then Grayson got hurt.”
My heart stops.
“G-Grayson got hurt? What’s wrong with him? Is he bleeding? Is anything broken?”
Harper takes the phone from my hand and puts it on speaker. She puts on her sweet but commanding, free of her normal sass voice. “Hi. Noah, is it? This is Harper, Logan’s friend. Can you explain what’s wrong?”
