Landon clears his throat. "Okay, you two. Logan, thank you for agreeing to come. I know it’s a lot, but I promise I wouldn’t ask if I had any other possibilities.”
She snaps out of playful girlfriend and shifts into Nurse Logan. "I understand. What do I need to be prepared for?”
Landon explains the situation and as the story goes on, I feel her body tense. I attempt to reassure her by rubbing her shoulders, but I know nothing will alleviate the hurt she is about to encounter.
When Landon is done, he stands and heads out to start transferring the medical supplies and car seat from Noah’s Jeep to my truck. Noah rises from his spot and gives Logan a quick hug before going to help Landon.
Wes stands and before he walks out, he stops in front of us. "I won’t let anything happen to you, I promise.” Then he walks out of the house.
Logan rises from my lap, takes her glasses off, and scrubs her hands down her face. I give her space so she can mentally prepare herself. After a few deep breaths, she looks to me and holds out her hand. "Ready?”
I stand and take her into my arms.
I beg that this is just a precaution to have Logan come along, but I know it’s probably false hope.
Chapter Thirty
Logan
Settlingintothepassengerseat of Grayson’s truck, I try to calm myself. I know he would never put me in danger but it’s not me I’m worried about. It's him. I know we both see this a lot in our jobs, but this is new territory. I see patients every day at the ER that are in bad shape, but I get to help put them back together.
Most of the time.
Grayson only sees the extreme cases and then has to rush them to get help. He told me that Landon updates them on what happens after they get help or go to their loved ones.
The last time he had a bad mission, I could tell it hit him hard. All he said was that they didn’t get there in time to help the victim. I don’t know what happened, but I didn’t let him out of my sight until I saw a smile back on his face.
I’ve seen enough death to last me a lifetime and I will never forget the faces of the ones I’ve lost. Grayson sees the ones that didn’t even get a chance and I can’t imagine the hurt he feels.
Grayson pulls me out of my thoughts by placing a hand on my leg. "You can take a nap if you want. We have a drive ahead of us.”
"No, I’m okay,” I say and place a hand over his, threading our fingers together.
His eyes remain on the dark road ahead. "You don’t have to, but I will never say no to uninterrupted time with my girl.” He glances over at me briefly before going back to the road. "This is my official request for you to wear your glasses out more. You’re fucking beautiful, Angel, especially when you wear my clothes, too.”
I know what he’s doing. He wants to keep the situation as light as possible before we enter whatever hell we are going to, and I will gladly play along with my man’s game.
Leaning over the center console, I kiss his cheek. "Thanks, Bear. But you can’t fool me, I know you only like me wearing your clothes out so people know I’m yours.”
"Damn right I do.”
"So, guess what?”
He squeezes my leg. "What?”
"Laura approved my week off. I can’t get my actual birthday off, but it starts the day after.”
I’ve been asking for this for the past month to have my birthday off and finally got a text yesterday that it was approved. Grayson has been bugging me for the past month that he wanted to take me on a weeklong camping trip and there was no way I could say no to that. Especially since my birthday will be marking almost five months of finding my best friend and love of my life.
A smile spreads across his handsome face. "That’s awesome, Angel. When we get back home, I’ll check my schedule and move my clients back or up if I need to. Speaking of birthday, have you put any thought into what you want?”
I have and I know he’s going to be happy.
"Yep. I want a tattoo.”
"Oh yeah? Wanna tell me what it is?”
"I want the waterfall where we went on our first hike.”
