I don’t know what I’m going to do tomorrow.
“Joe?”
I smile as I look up.
“Hey, sweet boy.” He comes over all wrapped in the new blanket I got him and sits right on my lap, laying his head on my shoulder.
“I’m tired, but my arm hurts too bad and I’m hungry.”
“How about I get you some toast and painkillers?”
“How about some warm milk?” His hand slides lightly down my pec.
He couldn’t mean what I think he means.
“The doctor said toast or broth.” I try for stern, and he huffs.
“Fine, toast.”
“I’ll get it and then I’ll tuck you back into your bed?” I rock him gently back and forth. “Does that sound good?”
“But I want to sleep with you.”
“Izzy, that’s not a good idea.”
“I don’t care,” he huffs. “I can’t sleep, and I’m in pain. Feel sorry for me.”
A low chuckle rumbles from my throat, and I get off the couch. Taking his good hand, I direct him back to his room and help snuggle him back into the bed. When I try to leave, he pouts again.
“I’ll be right back.” I kiss his forehead.
“Okay, but hurry.”
I run to the kitchen and back, making sure he drinks a whole glass of water with his pills and that he eats the toast. Pain pills on an empty stomach are no good.
I help him lie back down and use my hands to tuck every inch of the blanket around his body.
He laughs. “Now I can’t move.”
I kiss his forehead. “Good, then maybe you’ll sleep.”
“Stay, please?”
“Just until you fall asleep.”
Chapter 11
Izzy
My arm is throbbing in pain, and my eyes are watering as I start to cry.
It hurts so bad.
Joe comes running in and sits down, taking my good hand in his. “Hey, it’s okay, baby. Tell me what’s wrong. Are you in pain, hungry? Is your tummy upset?”
“Hurts.” I hold up my rainbow cast. Even in the dark, it looks pretty.
“I’m sorry, baby, but you can’t have any more painkillers yet.”
