“Love boo.” I giggle again. “Love you.”

Chapter 10

Joe

This night is taking forever, and I have a very uncomfortable feeling in my chest. I was in such a hurry to get to him that I didn’t stop home to get my pump.

We’re obviously going to the cabin tonight because it would just be cruel to make him drive an hour and a half instead of the thirty minutes it takes to get to the cabin. Maybe once I get him home and asleep, I can try to squeeze some out in the shower, and I’ll order a new pump, next-day shipping.

Unless the snow screws me. I check the window and it’s still clear.

“I’m sorry. For dragging you here.”

“I already told you it’s not a problem, and I’m sorry that you’re not feeling well.”

“Having you here makes it better.”

“You’re a sweet boy.”

“You’ll come home with me, right?”

“Of course. I already told my boss I’m not coming back until after the first of the year.”

“I’m glad.”

Dr. Shauna walks back in then. “Okay, everything looks good, and we’re ready to put on the cast. I heard Izzy is shivering?”

“Yes.” His teeth chatter.

“I’m sorry. When you go home, we’ll get you some meds that aren’t as strong and shouldn’t have the same side effects.”

“Will he be able to go home soon?” I ask. I don’t know how much longer I can stay here watching my boy get tortured. And without leaking.

“Yeah, we’ll put on his cast, and once it sets, he should be good to go.”

“My stomach is upset too, but I don’t feel like I’m going to puke.”

“That’s not uncommon either. The pain and the meds can have that effect, but we also haven’t let you eat anything other than ice chips for the last few hours. Try eating something light, like toast or broth, once you get home and always before the meds. Alright now, we need you to sit up.” Izzy struggles to get out of the blankets, and Jamal moves to help him, but I give him a glare that he smiles at and steps back. She moves a tray over with a pair of scissors and a bunch of different wraps. “Jamal is going to help you keep your arm straight here.”

Izzy gives him the side-eye, and Jamal laughs. “This time I’m just holding, not holding down.”

I watch as the doctor deftly works and explains each step along the way. Izzy watches, and he looks very pleased with the results.

“It’s so cool.”

“It is,” I agree.

“The best cast I’ve seen all week,” Jamal adds.

“So, we’re all done. I’m going to have the nurse come in and go over your care instructions so we can get you discharged.” She holds out her hand to shake Izzy’s. “You were a very good patient, but hopefully I won’t need to see you again, cause you can follow up with your regular doctor.”

“Thanks,” Izzy says, then he turns to lie down again.

“You’re welcome.”

“Thanks.” I nod to them as they leave.

“My pleasure.”
