Rowan’s head snapped to the side as the woman punched Adrian with a shadow fist, and his eyes widened before meeting mine.
I sucked in a sharp breath. A knife made of shadow appeared in her hands, and before I could scream a warning, the blade surged up and into his stomach.
I barely heard Thea and Jay shouting as I ran. That feeling of lightning, of absolute power born from electricity and the coming storm, rushed through me. My heart slowed, crawling in my chest, as my hand flew up.
A bolt of lightning, purple in colour, left my palm and slammed into the woman. The shadows that had been sliding up her arms and around her legs disintegrated.
Adrian’s eyes never left mine as he dropped to his knees. Awe and something else crossed his handsome features.
I fell to the ground beside him as he lurched forward, hands clutching at his abdomen.
“No, no, no, no, no,” I murmured, grabbing him before he could faceplant.
The tears I’d been holding at bay finally threatened to spill over as I gently lowered Adrian’s trembling body to the
ground. I pulled his head onto my lap, careful of the blood staining my skirt.
“You’re going to be okay,” I whispered, swallowing hard. “I promise. You’re going to be fine.”
A soft smile played at his lips. “A kiss would make certain of that, sweetheart,” he croaked.
I sniffed as tears rolled down my cheeks. Carefully, I pressed my hand against his stomach—blood streamed from the wound, too quickly, too much. But I pressed my hand into it anyway. I didn’t know what kind of healing magic was possible with the supes. I just knew I had to make sure he didn’t bleed out.
Adrian looked up at me, and I felt it like a snake striking, fire flooding my system and pulling at a deep and primalcreatureburied beneath the bones of my chest. A ring of gold ignited around his emerald-green eyes, and as I stared at myself in his reflection, I noticed the same ring appear around my own.
He opened his mouth, but no words passed his lips. Blood trickled down the corner of his mouth and into the gold of his hair.
Warmth blossomed along my hands where I clutched at Adrian. The creature inside me reared its head and released a scream that echoed in my head.
Mate.
