Page 18 of Stuck On Them

I was just about to Google the LRG, which I was kicking myself for not doing in the first place, when the conference room door opened at the end of the hall. A man and woman stepped out, the man stopping to shake someone’s hand just inside the doorway. Some laughter filtered down the hall, and then the man and woman went toward the reception area.

It’s not them. It can’t be.

Feeling reassured I was just having first day jitters, I grabbed the list I’d printed along with my favorite pen from my bag and walked down the hall.

Time to meet my new bosses.

Someone Better Call HR

Garrett

“Garrett, were you even listening?” Ryker dropped into his office chair rather aggressively after seeing our new clients out. It had been a great meeting and was yet another big marketing account we had made a deal on.

“What? Of course I was.” I was listening to bits and pieces, but I was sure he would fill me in since he tended to micromanage nearly everything we did. With this new client, he would be even more up our asses since they’d paid a premium for us to handle most of the creative work.

I grabbed my latte and took a sip, the drink reminding me who I ran into a few short hours before. Was it awkward as fuck? Yes. What do you say to the woman you’re still jerking off to daily?

“You know what we need… well mainly you two, not me.” Luca leaned back and put his feet on the table, crossing them at the ankles. “You need-”

He didn’t finish his thought thankfully—it was probably about getting laid—because there was a soft knock on the open conference room door.

Paige stood there with just as much surprise on her face as I felt. She met my eyes briefly before lifting a white sheet of paper and staring down at it.

My hand squeezed around my nearly empty cup, just hard enough to dent it. Ryker stiffened next to me, and Luca’s feet flew off the table as he sat up straight in his chair.

“Paige?” It was the first time I’d ever heard Ryker sound confused.

He’d told us she was in town on a business trip, but clearly that wasn’t the case since it was three weeks later and there she was, standing in our conference room doorway looking like a hot secretary from a fantasy.

She was dressed in a black business suit that hugged her curves in all the right places. The neckline of her white blouse wasn’t by any means low cut, but if I just reached over and unbuttoned one button, it would give the perfect amount of cleavage.

I set my drink down and ran my hand down my face. There was a reason I hadn’t wanted to watch Ryker fuck again and it was because of shit like this. Gone were the days of hit it and quit it.

“Hi.” She didn’t look up from the piece of paper she had in her hand, her cheeks tinted pink. “I’m your new assistant. I just needed clarification on a few of the items on the list I received and to check in to see if you needed anything before I get started on it,” she said in one breath.

No one knew what to say, not even Luca, who usually had enough to say for all of us. What were we supposed to do with this? With her?

I already couldn’t stop thinking about her and the way she had morphed from self-conscious and unsure to confident and bold. But the woman in front of us right then was anything but those things.

Her hand shook slightly as she looked up through long lashes right at me and then quickly looked back at the paper.

“Absolutely not.” Ryker took his glasses off and put them on top of his closed laptop. “What are you doing here? What do you want from us?”

Her fingers tightened on the paper. “I want to know if I really need to take Garrett’s plant to the doctor, take your sweater to PBS, and… line up miniature gnomes on your desk when you’re not in there.”

Luca couldn’t hide his smile. “Those items are a priority. Did they get you a card yet?”

Ryker glared at him. “Can’t you take anything seriously? This is a business.”

“Oh, lighten up, Rykie. I didn’t know we’d have a new assistant today or I wouldn’t have put them on there. They were solely for Ethan’s amusement.” Luca’s smile was gone as he met Ryker’s disapproval head-on. “Life isn’t all about work. Maybe you’d be happier if you had a little fun… with gnomes.”

“That’s easy to say when you have Daddy’s money.” Ryker stood, walking around the conference table and snatching the paper from Paige’s hand. “We need a minute to discuss this. Sue did not consult us.”

She sucked in a sharp breath, the wrath only a woman could carry all over her face. “You’re an asshole.” She turned on her heel and pulled the door shut behind her, the loud click feeling like a slap.

“What’s there to discuss?” Luca stood, going to the door and stopping with his hand on the handle. “I’d rather go enjoy my daddy’s money.”
