"Let's talk about this. I know three mates isn't an ideal situation, but I can't help it. We should be asking why I have three mates, not getting upset about it." She shrugged as if it was no big deal, and that was the only reason I needed to get away.
"I need a few minutes so I don't lash out at you." Her face fell, and I took a step closer to her. “You drive me fucking nuts with your back talking and ability to push my buttons… and then you look at me with these eyes…” I swiped a finger across the soft skin under her eye. “Seduce me with these curves.” I slowly ran my hand down her side and squeezed her hip. “Taunt me with these lips.”
Me needing a breather suddenly went out the window, and I gently brushed my lips against hers, and she groaned. I loved the way she trembled against me, and I slid my hand to her lower back, pulling her flush against me and deepening the kiss.
I smoothed my hands over her ass before lifting her onto the island, her legs wrapping around me. I had never wanted a woman as bad as I wanted Ivy in that moment, especially when she shivered as my lips trailed down her neck and placed the lightest kisses on her cleavage. Thank the moon for low cut shirts.
Just as my fingers were making their way under her shirt, Sara walked into the kitchen. I hadn’t even heard or smelled her enter the damn house.
“Uh, this is awkward as fuck. Remind me not to eat there.” She just waltzed right in and went to the refrigerator, where she started pulling out what looked to be the makings of a sandwich.
“You need to lock your doors, Cole.” Ivy ran her fingers through my hair as she buried her face in my neck and let out a defeated and annoyed groan.
“I have a key.” Sara casually made a sandwich with us still on the counter, obviously waiting for her to leave. “By the way, great job escaping today. I applaud your efforts. Way to stick it to the man." She took a bite out of her sandwich and leaned against the counter. "I had a look at the locator data and then hacked into the security cameras at the coffee shop."
Ivy's face fell, and she slid off the counter. "Sara-"
"You should tell him." She pointed her sandwich at me and then walked out of the kitchen humming to herself, leaving the mustard and turkey out for someone else to put away.
"Tell me what?" My need to run was strong, and I clenched my fists.
"I'll tell you tonight, all right?" She looked down at her feet.
My nostrils flared with each breath I took, and I went to the door, unbuttoning my pants and kicking off my shoes as I went.
"Cole-"
My body jolted forward as soon as the sliding door was open far enough, and I ran for the trees.
* * *
My muscles pulsatedas I ran through the forest. Too much had happened, and I needed a moment to breathe away from it all. Being alpha wasn't my first choice in life, but my pack had needed a strong leader and no one else was good enough. Some days were harder than others; today being one of those days.
I came to my favorite clearing where wildflowers were just budding and filled the air with their fragrant aroma. I inhaled deeply and my wolf was confused by the smell. What was that?
Putting my nose to the ground, I tried sniffing it out, but it was in the air. It was a cloying sort of smell that put my wolf on edge, but I couldn't identify it.
A loud explosion filled the silence and pain ripped through me as I fell onto my side.
I've been shot.
I tried to get back to my feet, but the pain was too much. How had a hunter gotten into our territory? Where were my betas and the patrols? I tried to open a connection to anyone to get help, but everything was cutoff.
I'm going to die.
Chapter Twenty-Seven
Ivy
We went through the gate of the Southern Shelf, guns out and ready to fire. Sara preferred a shot gun, me a semi-automatic rifle. As we walked across the icy snow, our boots crunched. On the right was Gateway Harbor, where we could see a marauder or some other villain patrolling.
Sara was the guns blazing type, while I preferred a slower and more stealth approach. Good thing I chose the character that had amazing healing capabilities to heal her reckless ass.
“So, you just hacked into the security and listened to my whole conversation?” I ran after her as she went through the gates and a psycho ran at her. She blew him away with her shotgun while I hit the marauder. More red dots appeared on our map, signaling we were about to be overrun by the enemy.
"The safety of the pack comes above all else. If that means invading your privacy, then that's what I'll do." She shrugged as I followed her character back through the gates. "You have close friends, right?"
"Yes." My eyes didn’t move from the screen where we were about to go storming in, despite how outnumbered we were.
