This is what matters.
She stirs in her sleep and turns to face me, cupping my cheek.
“What are you doing?”
“I’m watching you sleep… something I love to do,” I reply, smiling.
She yawns. “Aren’t you tired after what we just did… twice?”
Laughing, I lean down and peck her lips. “I could never get tired.”
She straightens, and her face turns serious.
“What is it, baby?” I ask, cupping her face. It seems the last couple of days, I’ve noticed she’s been holding back something. But I thought I’d give her time to tell me, but now I need to know.
She sits up, and I follow.
Grabbing her hand, I bring it up to my lips and kiss the back of it. “Serena, you can tell me anything.”
She sniffles and looks at me. “I’ve been trying to find the right words to tell you.”
Running my fingers over her hand, I try to encourage her to talk.
“I’m… I’m… pregnant.”
The news hits me like a thunderbolt. “I’m sorry. Did you say you’re pregnant?”
She smiles, “Yes, I did.”
“Oh, Serena… you’ve made me the happiest man alive.” Hugging her to me, I sense that she’s a little distant, so I pull back. “What’s wrong?”
She hesitates, and I notice she can’t look me in the eyes.
“Serena?” I say, pinching her chin and forcing her to look at me.
“Oh, Harley, I want this to be yours, I do…” she trails off.
Confused at what she’s saying, I ask, “What do you mean?”
“I’m six weeks pregnant, and that means it could be either yours or Luca’s.”
That hits me straight in the gut worse than any knife can.
Of course, what was I thinking?
She was with Luca before me.
Obviously, they had slept together, but the thought she could be having his baby kills me inside.
Jumping out of bed, I begin to pace.
Serena gets up and stands in front of me. “Harley, I’m sorry this is happening. I want the baby to be yours so much, but I don’t want to lie. The night I ran to Liv’s was because he r-raped me.” My voice breaks when I explain what Luca did that night. Harley had asked me before where those bruises around my neck came from, but I didn’t want to talk about it, and I didn’t need to burden Harley with that story, so I kept it quiet.
His jaw clenches, and his hands fist beside him.
I cup his face so he has my full attention. “Please don’t let the memory of Luca ruin this moment. I’m happy, Harley. I have a baby growing inside me that I love deeply. Please, Harley. No matter what happens, you need to promise me you will love us both even if this baby isn’t yours. Can you?” I look deeply into his eyes. “Can you love us?”
Feeling my eyes burn with unshed tears, I kiss Serena desperately. She needs to know I will love her and the baby no matter what. Sure, if the baby is mine, I’ll be ecstatic, but if it isn’t, then I will bring it up as my own anyway. I will love the child because it’s half Serena. How could I not?
