“You know, I always wanted more for you than this club, but now I’m damn proud to have you part of it. One day, son…” he says, gesturing around the room, “… this club will be yours.”
“Come on, Dad, we both know that’s a long way away.”
“Let’s go have a beer with our brothers before your mom calls, breaking my balls.”
We laugh at that comment, grab our beers, and leave the room.
Chapter Four
SERENA
“No, Dad, I won’t do it. I love him. You can’t make me give him up.”
“Serena.” My dad growls as we stand in our living room discussing my future.
“Youwilldo what I say. I’m your father. Luca is a good man. He always asks about you and will make you happy.”
Javier Clemente is Luca’s father. He’s now twenty-five years old and went to Harvard Law School. His father asked Luca to go to Harvard to study law so he could represent his father whenever he was charged with any crime. A brilliant move, of course.
I’ve grown up with Luca. He was older than me and never noticed me before. Last year, he told my dad that I’d turned into a stunner. His comment caused my dad to come up with a plan—one that involves me marrying Luca Clemente.
There’s no way I’m agreeing to that plan.
No way in hell.
Javier is based in Mexico, but he has a place in New York that he visits to monitor how things are going in the US. We take a trip to New York every year, and I swore last year that it was the last time I’d go to those stupid celebrations. I only do it to make my dad happy.
I know it must be hard on him since losing my mom, and part of me thinks he blames me for her death. Not that he’s ever said anything, but sometimes I catch him staring at me, and when I ask what’s wrong, tears form in his eyes, he shakes his head, turns around, and walks into his room.
I understand why he sees my mom in me. We look exactly alike. It’s kind of sad he lost his true love when I came into the world. That’s mainly why I give in, trying to compensate for losing her. But I can’t do this. It’s completely out of the question for me to be with any other man. My heart and soul belong to Harley, and I can’t fathom my life without him beside me.
Rachel is the only one who can help me make it through the Christmas season. She and I are the same age, and she’s related to Luca. We get along great, and we both find that the Clemente family gatherings are dull. Without her, I’d be bored to death. I force a smile on my face and recall my dad’s words—weneed to maintain a good public image.
My father has the chance to be part of the Clemente family, which involves a life of luxury and having no needs. My father might want that, but it’s not what I need. If I had the chance, I would live with Harley in a shack. Having him in my life is the only thing that matters.
“Papi, you know who he is and what family he belongs to. How could you want me to spend my life with a man like that?”
“Serena, you will never be without anything, and as your father, I will be very important to the Clemente family. I’m asking you, Serena, to do it for me. Go on a date with him.”
“I can’t believe you’re asking me to do this. I love Harley.”
“Hah… that boy has no future. He’s just a man who’s in a club. Tell me,carino, how will he support you?” Dad says, brushing my cheek with the back of his hand. I turn away, not wanting to look at him right now. How can he want this for me? He can’t be serious.
“Serena, I’m only looking out for you and your future.”
Angrily, I turned to face him. “Are you, Papi? Or is ityourfuture you’re worried about?”
His cheeks turn red with anger, and I inhale, trying to calm my temper.
Storming toward me, he points a finger and states, “How dare you. You know what sort of life we have had. You grew up without a mom. I worked three jobs to provide for you and give you a home. If it weren’t for Javier seeing me that day drunk as hell in the bar, we wouldn’t be here.” He motions around our sweet home.
Tears blur my vision when I realize what my dad wants. He’s asking me to walk away from Harley to be with a guy I don’t care for and who’s a member of an incredibly dangerous family. How could he want this for me?
“Don’t even think about making me feel guilty, Dad. We have all we need. We have money, and we have each other.” I cry, tears running down my cheeks as I drop my face in my hands, leaning forward on his chest.
Moments pass, and as I still don’t feel his arms around me, I know I’ve angered him.
His hands grip my arms, pulling me away from him instead. “If you don’t do this for us, Serena, then you will no longer be the daughter I thought you were.” He storms out of the room and down the hall to his office, slamming the door closed.
