I must confess I had fun.
He showed me around the Mexican islands, and we ate lunch on his extremely large boat. We swam in the ocean, and he ordered the captain to drop anchor on the gorgeous island of Isla Maria Madre, where he had organized a basket with champagne and strawberries to accompany us on the beach. It was incredibly romantic.
We spent the afternoon talking, and I heard more about his childhood. It was nice to witness a different side of him. Not the professional and serious lawyer, but a more down-to-earth man wearing shorts and a polo shirt.
I don’t know what it was about that day, but when he dropped me back home, I accepted his kiss goodnight. My first response was to pull back, but he held me close while one hand gripped the back of my neck, keeping me hostage to his mouth.
At first, it felt foreign, and guilt ran through me over the fact I was kissing a man other than Harley, but then he whispered against my lips, “You taste just as I imagined… like strawberries.” It had been a long time since a man had caressed or even kissed me, and I’d missed it.
We embraced for a few moments more before I broke away and said, “I must leave.”
He gave me a warm smile, and instead of kissing me again, he simply nodded and said, “I am very grateful you came today. It was lovely to have your company.”
I responded, “I agree,” and surprisingly, I meant it. I enjoyed his company. It had been ages since I had fun with another man, and I eagerly awaited our next date.
We had seen Luca a few times after that, and Rachel always had an excuse for not coming out with us. And I was okay with it. It was nice to think of something or someone besides Harley.
Luca had taken me to a few popular tourist places in Mexico, and he was such a gentleman on every occasion— holding the car door open for me, pushing the chair in when I sat down at a restaurant, and even buying me a rose when someone was selling them. I was having way too much fun with him, and it was hard to believe this was the same dull Luca I’d known years ago.
After six months of living in Mexico, I was back in Houston. Out of nowhere, Luca showed up at my door, saying he had to see me. He’d been dying to lay eyes on my gorgeous face. His words.
I remember feeling fuzzy, warm, and excited that he was at my home.
It thrilled my dad to see me with Luca. Finally, it was like his dreams were becoming a reality.
I would’ve said you were nuts if you told me I was marrying Luca Clemente three years ago—I never saw this coming, and I’m still stunned.
“I’m so pleased I chose this dress. Thank you both for coming with me.”
I turned toward Rachel and Liv and reached out my hands, and they each gave me one of theirs.
“You two hold a special place in my heart, and this fairy-tale life I’m living is all thanks to you.”
“Luca Clemente and a fairy tale don’t seem to match up,” Rachel teases.
Rachel hasn’t stopped giving me a hard time about my plans to marry Luca since I told her that he proposed. I understand. She knows how much he used to bother me, and it would be weird that I was marrying into her family.
Liv draws close and wraps me in a hug. “I will always be here for you, Serena.”
“Thanks, Liv.”
I was still curious about Harley and wanted to ask Liv about him. She’s his cousin, and they’ve always been close, but she warned me not to bring him up from the beginning, as it would put her in a difficult position. I understood, but it didn’t stop me from trying all the same.
My questions to her were always along the lines of… When did she last see Harley? Does he have a girlfriend? Is he staying at the clubhouse or with his mom? And Liv would always reply with, “Serena, don’t even go there.”
She said he was away a lot and seemed busy. They didn’t even talk like they used to. Since his dad passed away, he’d been different. Liv filled me in on how he’s president of the club, and I was stunned he had taken on that role. I wanted to reach out and ask him about it, but I couldn’t. It hurt that he didn’t even call to give me such big news. But then again, why would he?
When I asked Liv if she told him I was getting married, she said no, that it wasn’t her place to discuss my business.
Would he even care?Probably not.
