“Of course I do.”

“Then see where this goes. Give him a couple of weeks, maybe a month, and check on him to see if he wants to catch up for a drink or something. Give him the sense that you’re waiting for him and still thinking about him.”

“You’re right. Thanks, Rachel. What would I do without you?”

“I do not know,” she says, smiling before she picks up her tea.

“You know, it sounds like you’ll have a lot of time on your hands. We can hang now.”

“We could hang out before.”

“Yeah, I know, but now we can hang-hang, you know, like go out dancing.”

Smiling, I reply, “Maybe give it some time, but yeah, we can definitely hang.”

“Good. What are you doing tonight?” I widen my eyes.

“I’m just joking. Geez.”

“To be honest, I need to find a job. I can’t keep relying on my dad’s money.”

“Weren’t you going to college?”

“I was… but I’m thinking of taking a break from school. I think I’ll go back next year. Right now, I need to figure out exactly what I want to do.”

“But you got into one of the best colleges.”

“I know I did, and I can always go back next year.”

“Okay, okay. Let’s move on from this subject, shall we? Let’s get you a job. Maybe we can find you something at the office I’m working at.”

“Publishing? I don’t know the first thing about publishing.”

“That doesn’t matter. I know the head editor, Mandy, is looking for a secretary. I’ll inquire about it for you.”

“Thanks, Rachel. I appreciate your help.”

“Any time, hon. Anyhow, how good would it be to work together?”

My mind drifts for a little.

“Serena… Serena… are you with me?”

“Sorry, I was somewhere else.”

“Mm… and let me guess. That somewhere else was with Harley.”

Sighing, I bring the tea to my mouth again, then stop midway, asking, “Do you have anything stronger?”

She smiles. “Yeah, I do. How’s vodka?”

“Perfect.”

SERENA

While sitting in the Uber, I glance up at my house.
